In the paper is presented an analysis of factors affecting increase of damage ability thus stoppages of machines for drilling in hard rocks. It was stated that overwear of tapered rotary tool is the reason of increased damages of machines and frequency of worn tools repalcement. Next, accelerated wear of these tools is connected with disturbance with rotation of tapered tool in the chuck that should be in cutting process. To explain the mechanism of tool rotation the analysis was supported by an example of tapered edge action on model cut material. On the base of obtained stress distribution in the area of rock and edge contact the conclusion could be derived on the character of edge and rock press. The hypothesis is based on obtained symmetrical distribution of relevant stresses and displacement of cut material in the edge vicinity independently on assumed rotation angle.
