Agriculture as a catalyst for new forms of urban habitat in residential architecture. A case of multi-family and mixed housing estates from 2010-2021 – European, American and Asian context

The article presented herein constitutes a research summary on urban, residential housing forms connected with agriculture developed in the years 2010–2021 throughout Northern America, Asia and Europe. The presented research was aimed at a comprehensive and comparative analysis of contemporary architecture, concerning new spatial phenomenon, analysing both the external form and the internal structure – formal and functional, of the resulting housing development. The method of global sampling was chosen as the possible examples of housing estates related to greenery or agriculture are spread worldwide. The paper aims to identify the main trends in creating a new form of urban living and to find the main points generating changes in the structure of buildings in connection with urban agriculture. Seven case studies were selected for the study, relating to both conceptual and already completed projects, showing a number of differences between the theoretical approach and its implementation, both in terms of the adopted assumptions and parameters of the obtained space in relation to housing estates combining architecture and greenery from that period. Case studies from Asia, North America and Europe created a background for comparison with the first Polish example of this type of development, located in Poznań.

Conditions for functioning of commercial streets in Warsaw

The following article focuses on the issue of various conditions that affect the functioning of commercial streets. The goal is to present the issue in the aspect of increasing competition from modern shopping malls, development of commerce on the internet and the ongoing process of change in consumer habits. Alongside general trends related to the transformation of downtown areas in recent decades, the processes mentioned were further supported by examples observed in London and Warsaw. The research methods adopted by the author comprise source literature research, including reports on the condition of commercial streets in cities worldwide, especially reports dating back to the last two years, that is 2018/2019, when the transformation processes of downtown areas, as well as the concepts regarding compact city began to emerge again. While observing the described phenomena, the author’s idea of heuristic method in the places of transformation was also applied. In the conclusion to the following paper, an attempt was made to indicate the directions for corrective actions, thereby isolating such transformations of the city downtown areas that will allow to preserve the proper functioning of commercial streets in a natural way.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest zagadnienie różnorodnych uwarunkowań mających wpływ na funkcjonowanie ulic handlowych. Celem jest przedstawienie problemu w aspekcie wzrastającej konkurencji ze strony nowoczesnych galerii handlowych, rozwoju handlu w przestrzeni internetowej oraz procesu zmian przyzwyczajeń konsumenckich. Oprócz ogólnych trendów przekształcania śródmieść w ostatnich dekadach poparto te procesy przykładami z Londynu i Warszawy. Przyjęte metody badawcze przez autorkę obejmują badania literaturowe, w tym także raportów o kondycji ulic handlowych w miastach świata, zwłaszcza z ostatnich dwóch lat 2018/2019, kiedy procesy przekształceń śródmieść jak i idee miasta zwartego znów powracają. W ramach obserwacji opisanych zjawisk, posłużono się także metodą heurystyczną wizji autorki w miejscach przeobrażeń. W części wnioskowej podjęto próbę wskazania kierunków działań naprawczych, wyodrębniając takie przekształcenia strefy śródmiejskiej miasta, które pozwolą w naturalny sposób zachować dobre funkcjonowanie ulic handlowych.
