A comparative analysis of brasses alloys, namely lead-free CuZn (CB771) and lead containing CuZn (CB770), was conducted in this article. The results of the comparative analysis and experimental investigations aimed to provide comprehensive knowledge about the thermophysical properties and solidification characteristics of these alloys. Thermodynamic simulations using Thermo-Calc software and modifications in the chemical composition of the CB771 alloy were employed to approximate its characteristics to those of the lead containing CuZn alloy. Thermal-derivative analysis of the alloys and a technological trial were carried out to determine their solidification characteristics, fluidity, and reproducibility. The casting trials were conducted under identical conditions, and the results were compared for a comprehensive analysis. Additionally, a solidification process simulation was performed using MagmaSoft software to match the thermophysical properties. The aim of this research was to achieve maximum consistency between the simulation results and experimental investigations.

The analysis of brasses regarding their microstructure, mechanical properties and ecological characteristics has been presented. The influence of characteristic alloying elements contained in the brasses and the possibilities of replacing them with other elements have been assessed. The paper contains the results of studies on the influence of chosen additional elements shaping the structure and properties of unleaded alloys based on Cu-Zn system as the matrix. The research aimed at determining the mechanism and the intensity of influence of such additives as tellurium and bismuth. The microstructures were investigated with the help of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDS) for determining significant changes of the properties.

Przedstawiono analizę mosiądzów w zakresie mikrostruktury, właściwości wytrzymałościowych oraz charakterystyki ekologicznej. Poddano ocenie wpływ charakterystycznych pierwiastków stopowych zawartych w mosiądzach i możliwości zastąpienia ich innymi. W pracy ujęto wyniki badań wpływu wybranych dodatkowych pierwiastków kształtujących strukturę i właściwości bezołowiowych stopów na osnowie układu Cu-Zn. Podjęte badania miały na celu określenie mechanizmu i intensywności oddziaływania dodatków takich jak: tellur i bizmut. Przeprowadzono badania mikrostruktur z wykorzystaniem mikroskopii świetlnej oraz mikroskopii skaningowej z mikroanalizą rentgenowską SEM-EDS, dla określenia istotnych zmian właściwości.

Purpose: Leaded brasses are most commonly used Cu alloys, especially for home fixture. High toxicity of lead to human caused tendency to eliminate this additions from these alloys. In this work a discussion of solutions to this problem is shown and possibilities of leaded brasses replacement with multi-component non-leaded brasses. Design/methodology/approach: In this work general properties of multi - component brasses are investigated (mechanical, technological and operating properties) as well as its structure and their correlation with chemical composition. Some interactions of additions are shown with physical and mathematical model of its influence on properties. Findings: It was found that in a complex of additions (closed system) the interactions can be described by physical model and mathematical equations showing properties in function of chemical composition can be used to optimize chemical composition for engineering alloys with known properties. Research limitations/implications: However introducing new elements to the system (chemical composition) will disturb the created models (physical and mathematical). It must be said that for investigated alloys optimal properties can be ensured using presented models. Practical implications: Presented approach enables optimization of alloy properties for particular application. Properties can be introduced to the mathematical model which with use of optimization methods will return needed chemical composition. Originality/value: Alloys engineered with use of presented approach have properties close to leaded brass with low increase in total production costs.

W artykule przedstawiono stosowane do tej pory metody eliminacji ołowiu ze stopów miedzi. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na możliwości zastąpienia mosiądzów armaturowych stopami wieloskładnikowymi. Omówiono metodykę prowadzanych badań i ich wyniki. Porównano w-iaściwości nowych stopów z właściwościami klasycznych mosiądzów ołowiowych.

In this work lead elimination methods from fixture brasses were described. Special attention was pointed on possibility of leaded brass replacement with multi-component brass. Studies methodology was shown with some results. The properties of new multi-component alloys were compared with traditional leader brass CuZn39Pb2.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane wyniki badań dotyczących oceny mikrostruktury na podstawie punktów charakterystycznych krzywych stygnięcia i krystalizacji. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono możliwości określania ilości fazy \beta' oraz wydzieleń twardych. Wyniki analizy termicznej i derywacyjnej oraz analizy ilościowej składników struktury pozwoliły określić zależności ułatwiające sterowanie jakością stopu.

In this work selected results concerned with structure evaluation with use of TDA method were presented. Special attention were put on \beta' phase and intermetalic phases quantity observation. Obtained results enabled relation determination between phases quantity and characteristic points of TDA points.

W pracy opisano wpływ zmiany składu chemicznego i struktury bezołowiowych mosiądzów odlewniczych na ich skrawalność. Do określenia skrawalności użyto metody wiercenia ze stałą siłą posuwową. Wyniki pokazały, które dodatki stopowe wpływają na tę cechę stopu oraz w jakim stopniu zależy ona od struktury.

In this work the chemical composition and microstructure influence on machineability of cast non-leaded brasses was described. Machineability was examined with use of Dagnell’s drilling test. The results have shown which addition influence this property and how much is it structure dependent.

W artykule przedstawiono porównanie własności technologicznych mosiądzu ołowiowego MO59 z grupą mosiądzów bezołowiowych, w których ołów zastąpiono ze względu na jego wysoką toksyczność bizmutem. Głównym celem badań było zbadanie lejności i skrawalności wymienionych stopów. Wskazano wady i zalety nowych rozwiązań.
