Natural Silk – an Unusual Fibre: Origin, Processing and World Production

The article presents the history of the development of sericulture in the world, including Poland. The advantages of natural silk which cause interest in its production and processing in many countries of the world are indicated. A brief description of mulberry silkworm breeding and the technology of silk processing into textile products are presented. The article provides information on the production of natural silk in several countries in 2015-2019. The share of silk in the world global production of fibres is about 0.2%. Over the last few years, the largest amounts of natural silk have been produced by the following countries: China, India and Uzbekistan – the total share of these countries in the world silk production is about 98%.

W artykule przedstawiono historię rozwoju jedwabnictwa w świecie, w tym również w Polsce. Wskazano na walory jedwabiu naturalnego, które powodują zainteresowanie jego produkcją i przetwarzaniem w wielu krajach świata. Przedstawiono także hodowlę jedwabnika morwowego oraz technologię przetwarzania jedwabiu na wyroby. W artykule zawarto dane statystyczne produkcji jedwabiu naturalnego dziewiętnastu krajów w ciągu ostatnich pięciu lat (2015-2019). Udział w produkcji jedwabiu na rynku tekstylnym wynosi około 0,2%. Główne kraje produkujące jedwab naturalny to: Chiny (63%), Indie (32,9%) i Uzbekistan (1,6%) – łączny udział tych krajów w światowej produkcji wynosi 97,5%.

W artykule przedstawiono historię rozwoju jedwabnictwa w Polsce oraz hodowlę jedwabnika morwowego w polskich warunkach. Przedstawiono także technologię przetwarzania jedwabiu na wyroby. W artykule zwrócono również uwagę na postęp jaki dokonywał się w Polsce i świecie w dziedzinie uprawy morwy, hodowli jedwabników i produkcji jedwabiu. W końcowej części artykułu przedstawiono aktualny stan jedwabnictwa w Polsce.

The article presents the history of the development of the silk industry in Poland and the cultivation of the mulberry silkworm in Polish conditions. The technology of silk processing into products was also presented. The progress that has been made in Poland and the world in the field of mulberry cultivation, silkworm farming and silk production was highlighted, too. The final part of the article presents the current state of the silk industry in Poland.

The tensile behaviour of fully degummed filaments of two commercial varieties of silk produced in India, namely mulberry (Bombyx mori) and tasar (Antheraea mylitta), has been investigated in dry and wet state. The tensile properties were correlated with the structures and morphologies of these two varieties of silk. The tenacity and elongation at break of these silks were not significantly different in dry and wet state; however, a slight reduction in initial modulus was noticed in wet state. The stress-strain behaviour of mulberry silk filament was different from that of tasar in that it demonstrated a characteristic yield point, lower modulus and elongation at break twice as high as that of mulberry. The characteristic stress-strain behaviour of theses two varieties of silk was correlated with density, birefringence, orientation index, sonic modulus and amino-acid composition. Poor orientation and less order in tasar are related to the higher percent of bulky groups present in fibroin.
