When conducting geological and engineering research, the most common statement is information that the landslide is shallow and should not pose a threat to the designed objects. In the case of large, structural landslides, this approach may lead, with the wrong determination of the deepest slip surface, to the occurrence of a construction disaster as a result of improper execution of the protection structure. The article presents specific locations of landslides with deep displacements in inclinometric columns exemplified by landslides monitored as part of the SOPO project in Tarnawa Górna, Słotowa and Międzybrodzie Bialskie - Łazki. The documented slip surfaces are found at depths of 19-42 m. Such deep displacements indicate that large, landslides reach significant thicknesses and such data should be presented in a geological and engineering documentation. It is proposed to modify the regulation on the execution of the geological and engineering documentation by adding a point regarding the documentation of landslides. If such an area exists, special requirements must be met when conducting geological surveys.

Landslide monitoring is applied in case of a hazard for existing infrastructure located on hazardous landslide. It is the exact case of the Kasinka Mala landslide in the Outher Carpathians which causes a danger for the surrounding infrastructure. In order to measure the terrain deformations caused by landslide movements, the unnamed aerial vehicle equipped with a non-metric camera has been used. As a result of processing of aerial photos, orthophotomaps as well as digital elevation models have been produced. It enabled providing information about vertical and horizontal displacements caused by the landslide. The results of analysis shows that the mass movements occur at a different pace, but also that there are stable areas in the landslide. The application of UAV photogrammetry for landslide monitoring allows getting the information about the displacements in the unvegetated areas.

Starting from 2011, landslides in Łaski over the Żywieckie lake and in Piaski-Drużków over the Czchowskie Lake have been included into the landslide monitoring program as a part of the SOPO project of PGI-NRI. Both landslides present a real hazard to hydrotechnical constructions. In 2018 the monitoring has been extended for the Łaski landslide including the on-line component. The article presents the subsurface and surface monitoring systems and discusses the results of over 7-years observations. In both discussed cases, the landslides have long, multi-stage history. The measurement data show that, their activity has decreased since the activation impulse in 2010. However, they remain active, especially on the deep slip surfaces. High porosity and, consequently, rapid changes in the groundwater level and rainfall intensity confirm the unstable nature of these landforms. This also confirms that the possibility of further activation or sudden landslide descent into water reservoirs is still a real hazard.

Theintensification of disastrous landslide movements in southern Poland occurring at the end of the 20th century, showed that there was a need to create a unified system of acquiring and collecting landslide data. It also indicated the importance of raising awareness of the existence of landslide hazard for both residents and public administration (decision-makers). This was also the reason for launching a nationwide project, the Landslide Counteracting System (LCS; SOPO in Polish). This system is a platform for acquiring and processing information about mass movements in order to support mainly for government and local administration. The main goal of the project is to reduce the landslide riskin Poland, and to limit damages caused by the development of landslides.

Mass movements are a major problem associated with the sustainable planning of space. They often cause permanent degradation of the areas of development or agricultural use. Exclusion ofactive landslides and periodically active landslides from development area is obvious. Restrictions on land use areas of active and inactive landslides and their buffer zones involve differences in opinions. A useful tool in the assessment of risk of landslide in such areas can be a low-cost system LandSMS (LandSlide Monitoring System). The prototype of the system consists of a sensing element (tie-rod), a monitoring station and a data server. Tie-rod is attached to the concrete slab, which is stabilized on the landslide area. Surface deformations resulting from movement of the landslide are controlled by two sensors - encoder and an ultrasonic sensor. The system operates continuously. In the case of an emergency situation system informs authorized persons about the incident. Efficiency and system functions are analyzed on a selected area of the landslide in Klodne (Little Poland, commune Limanowa). Preliminary results confirm the usefulness of the system. In the initial observation period (October-December 2016) displacement reached 8 mm. This is due to stabilization of the measuring point. Later, there was no displacement effected by mass movements reported.

W artykule przedstawiono problem występowania osuwisk wzdłuż linii kolejowych. Omówiono metody monitorowania ruchów mas ziemnych, a także sposoby zabezpieczania nasypów i skarp przed zjawiskami osuwiskowymi. Na przykładzie osuwiska w miejscowości Sadowie wzdłuż ważnej linii kolejowej nr 8 Kraków – Warszawa przedstawiono próbę monitoringu aktywności osuwiska metodą skanowania laserowego przyrządem RIEGL-VZ 400 oraz zaprezentowano wyniki takich pomiarów.
