Water quality and waste management are two chief problems that the modern world is struggling with. Intensified development of the industry not only leads to the production of large amounts of solid waste that must be stored in landfills but can also result in contaminant emissions into the environment. Enormous quantities of ash produced from coal combustion have been a long-term problem of the industry. Literature studies show that fly ash can be used as a material to produce cheap and efficient zeolite-type adsorbents due to abundance of alumina-silicates in their composition. Fly ashes which were processed into zeolites as a result of alkaline hydrothermal treatment were obtained from two power plants in Poland (in Turów and Zgierz). The obtained zeolite materials and raw fly ash samples were characterised in terms of specific surface area, particle size distribution and density. The structure was also investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in the mid- infrared wavenumber range. Two raw fly ashes and two zeolite materials were examined for their ability to remove Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The results showed that the amount of adsorbed copper ions by alkaline-modified fly ash was higher than for unmodified fly ash. The ion removal efficiency is high and exceeds 95%.

Od kilkudziesięciu lat zarówno w Polsce jak i na świecie obserwuje się znaczny wzrost zainteresowania odpadami energetycznymi, szczególnie popiołami lotnymi wytworzonymi w trakcie spalania naturalnych złóż węglowych. Wynika to przede wszystkim z dużego rozwoju gospodarczego, ale także z trudności w gromadzeniu i utylizacji tych odpadów. Możliwość przetworzenia (modyfikowania) odpadów energetycznych w celu uzyskania pełnowartościowych wyrobów budowlanych (produktów), wiąże się z poszukiwaniem wysokoefektywnych procesów, które zapewnią uzyskanie produktu o wysokiej jakości i praktycznym zastosowaniu. Jednym z procesów technologicznych, pozwalających na przekształcenie popiołów lotnych w wysokojakościowy materiał o zastosowaniu praktycznym, jest modyfikowanie ich właściwości za pomocą nowatorskiej technologii aktywatora magnetycznego Wapeco. Wykorzystanie tego urządzenia do przetwarzania (modyfikacji) popiołów lotnych, w tym pozyskania odpowiednio zmielonego popiołu lotnego (o doskonałych właściwościach reaktywnych) stanowi jedną z innowacyjnych koncepcji technologicznych na rynku krajowym i światowym. Stąd, ukierunkowanie badań na modyfikowanie popiołów lotnych z wykorzystaniem innowacyjnego urządzenia, oraz wprowadzenie produktów tych modyfikacji na rynek budownictwa komunikacyjnego stanowi ważne zagadnienie gospodarcze i ekologiczne.

For decades, both in Poland and in the world there is a significant increase in interest in energy wastes, in particular fly ashes produced during the combustion of natural deposits of coal. It is mainly due to high economic growth, but also results in the difficulties in collecting and disposing wastes. The possibility of processing (modifying) the energy waste in order to obtain a full-fledged construction products is associated with search for highly effective processes that provide a high quality product with practical application. One of the processes that allows for the conversion of fly ashes into high-quality material with practical application is a modification of their characteristics by using an innovative technology of Wapeco magnetic activator. The usage of this equipment for the processing (modification) of fly ashes, including obtaining appropriately grounded fly ashes (with excellent reactive properties) is one of the innovative technological concepts on the national and global market. Therefore, the focus on the research of the ashes modification by using an innovative device as well as the implementation of these products is an important economic and environmental issue.
