We present an issue containing articles that were presented at the Third Scientific and Technical Conference "Minerals Sorbents", Raw Materials, Power Engineering, Environmental Protection, Modern Technologies, which took place on 18–19 September 2017 in Cracow. The conference was a great forum for exchanging experiences, presenting the latest research achievements of the country's leading scientific units to the representatives of the key industry sectors whose production technologies are based on the use of mineral sorbents.

W artykule przedstawiono refleksje na temat pojęcia i sensu nauki, pracy naukowej i warunków niezbędnych do pracy naukowej, wymagającej szczególnych zalet umysłu i ducha. Przywołując największe osiągnięcia nauki, Profesor formułuje zagrożenia wynikające z wpływu nauki i postępu technicznego na stosunki społeczne. Nawołuje do radykalnych zmian sposobu życia człowieka i pojmowania przyrody. Przestrzega, że nauka i technika nie są dobrami absolutnymi.

The article presents thoughts on the concept and meaning of science, scientific work and the conditions necessary for scientific work, requiring special advantages of the mind and spirit. Recalling the greatest achievements of science, Professor formulates risks arising from the impact of scientific and technological progress on social relations. Calls for radical changes in the way of human life and understanding of nature. He warns that science and technology are not absolute goods.
