Modelling is the first step in producing reliable and understandable financial models. This can be achieved by adopting four basic rules: building the model in modules, separating data and logic completely, being obvious rather than clever, in designing formula, making the model self-documenting wherever possible. The paper discusses each of these points. Following set of principles of model building will make for accurate, efficient and readable financial models.
