The acts, regulations and technical instructions in force imply the obligation of regular monitoring of the railroad condition at the railroad management institutions. This monitoring consists of several types of measurements, most important of which – railroad surface diagnostics – covers the assessment of the technical condition of tracks by measuring the key parameters specifying the rail track position. This paper presents the currently applied solutions, new technologies and potential directions of measurement method development.

W artykule zawarto krótką dyskusję dotyczącą wybranych kierunków, w jakich podąża fotogrametria. Wiele nowych podejść w zakresie pozyskania i przetwarzania obrazów cyfrowych, ich wzajemne łączenie i bezpośrednia georeferencja stwarza coraz większe możliwości dla ich stosowania. Automatyzacja pomiarów fotogrametrycznych jest od dawna w zakresie badań podstawowych. Jednakże pomimo wieloletnich zmagań nie został uzyskany jeszcze taki poziom, na jaki pierwotnie liczono, w którym pomiary fotogrametryczne są realizowane w czasie rzeczywistym, a zadowalające wyniki dostarczane natychmiast na żądanie.

The article presents a short discussion referring to selected directions photogrammetry is following. Many new approaches in obtaining and processing digital images, their mutual combination and direct georeferencing create new possibilities in their application. Making photogrammetric measurements automatic has been included into basic studies for many years. However, despite long-lasting efforts the level expected at the beginning, when photogrammetric measurements has not been achieved. Our expectation for the future are photogrammetric measurements made in real time and satisfactory results obtained on request.

Mobile mapping systems are well suitable uin road environments for their high quality images georeferencing capabilities. Some drawback exists becouse data post-processing is a very time-consuming task. This approach is highly focused on road GIS applications: three measure classes are identified, a processing approach is presented and a simplified user interface is proposed.
