Performance evaluation of roundabouts using a microscopic simulation model

Contemporary planning of the road network in cities assumes the use of transport models. The microscopic model allows provision of information and decision-making regarding, for example, emissions, traffic organisation, geometrics of the intersection and traffic control system. This article describes the development of comprehensive methodology applied for carrying out the research related to the design of geometrical parameters of the roundabout. The methodology involves developing instructions for preparing solutions for performance evaluations of roundabouts using a microscopic simulation model with the VISSIM software. The application of the developed methodology was prepared on the case study of the roundabout in Gdańsk. The results of the prepared case study were discussed.

Od 2014 roku w studiach wykonalności zlecanych przez PKP PLK S.A. wymaga się wsparcia procesu projektowego poprzez wykonywanie symulacji ruchowych z wykorzystaniem dedykowanych narzędzi informatycznych. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono uzasadnienie dla wprowadzenia nowego elementu do dokumentacji przedprojektowych. Opisano proces tworzenia modelu mikrosymulacyjnego i symulacji ruchu kolejowego. Wyjaśniono rolę modelu w procesie przygotowania studium wykonalności. Zaprezentowano przykłady wniosków płynących z mikrosymulacji, mające wpływ na kształtowanie rozwiązań technicznych.

Since 2014 in feasibility studies contracted by PKP PLK S. A. it is required to support the design process by carrying out simulation of railway traffic using dedicated informatics tools. This article presents justifi cation for introducing a new element to the pre-project documentation. The processes of creation of the microsimulation model and of simulation railway traffic were described. The role of the model in the preparation of feasibility study was described. Examples of conclusions from the microsimulation, having an impact on the development of technical solutions were presented.
