Demands for micro/nano products and assembly systems have been raised significantly to meet the ever complex technical needs for modern society. In this paper, we share the experiences and results of the study on the flexible micro assembly workcell focused primarily on a novel system implementation and system performance analysis. For flexible and autonomous assembly operations, we investigated a novel model based 3D depth measurement technology for faster and cost effective means to promote autonomous micro assembly systems in various industries. Micro parts, by its nature, are known of their shapes in advance for the majority of micro applications. We take advantage of the previously known shape of micro parts and hence apply a model based approach for a faster and cost effective localization and 3D depth measure of randomly loaded micro-parts on the workcell. The proposed 3D depth measuring method is based on the pattern recognition and multi-focus technique enabling it to extract only information useful for micro parts assembly for faster recognition. For demonstration purpose, silicon based oxide gears are fabricated by bulk micromachining and are used to study performance indices and to prove the usefulness of the proposed micro 3D depth measurement technology.

The paper deals with mechatronic approach to the design of micro grippers used in micro-assembly of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). The basic micro-assembly systems are described. The examples of several solutions for micro grippers with micro-actuators are presented.

The current trends, as observed in the article, are a significant growth, in terms of relevance, of microtechnology and nanotechnology, including microassembly; as well as the development of advanced automation which precise technologies may adapt. One of directions of advanced automation being currently developed are RMS (Reconfigurable Manufacturing System) systems which are capable of adjusting manufacturing functions and productivity levels. Advanced automation compels an integration of management and manufacturing systems.

Content available remote In-process monitoring and control of microassembly by utilising force sensor

Purpose: The aim of this research is to develop an in-process monitoring system to control the position of the shaft within a tolerance of ± 2.5 žm regardless of any conditions of the geometries of the shaft and the thrust plate. Design/methodology/approach: To realize an automated and intelligent microassembly process, a method has been developed to monitor and control the position of the shaft in the plate of the high-precision spindle motor for hard disk drive in order to reduce the shaft high problem. The force sensor is utilized and attached on the table of the microassembly machine under the jig of the plate to monitor the in-process pressing force. The experimentally obtained pressing force depends on the variations of the tolerance fitness and the geometrical roundness of the shaft and the plate but it is increased immediately when the shaft touches the stopper on the jig as the setting point. Hence, a method proposed introduces the reference voltage as the threshold value, which is calculated and obtained by taking the differentiation of the in-process pressing force. A slope detector is developed to calculate the output voltage based on the in-process pressing force, and the motor driver of machine is controlled when the obtained output voltage is larger than the reference voltage. Findings: It is proved that the shaft high problem is well controlled and reduced by the method developed regardless of any combinations of the geometries of the shaft and the plate. Practical implications: In this research, the microassembly process of the shaft into the plate of high-precision spindle motor for hard disk drive is showed. Originality/value: This paper has shown the developed the in-process monitoring system and control the manufacturing process automatically.

W mikromontażu dominującą rolę odgrywają zjawiska powierzchniowe, objętościowe i grawitacyjne. W chwytakach kapilarnych napięcie powierzchniowe sprawia, że staje się możliwe utrzymywanie na powierzchni cieczy ciał stałych, których gęstość jest większa od gęstości cieczy. Na podstawie wzoru Laplace'a opisującego ciśnienie kapilarne oraz równania Younga opisującego rozkład napięcia powierzchniowego na granicy trzech faz: ciało stałe- ciecz-gaz wyznaczono siłę chwytaka kapilarnego. Przedstawiono przebieg proces chwytania i manipulacji za pomocą chwytaka kapilarnego w procesie mikromontażu.

In capillary grippers the capillary effect and surface tension are used. Due to capillary tension solid bodies whose density is higher than that of the liquid stay afloat. Clear water or synthetic methanol are used in capillary grippers as wetting agents. From Laplace's formula of capillary pressure and Young's equation presenting the distribution of surface tension on the boundary of three phases: solid — fluid — gas the force of capillary gripper was calculated. The model process of gripping and manipulation carried out by capillary gripper in microassembly was presented.

The paper presents various methods of manufacturing and assembly applied in the production process of fluid microelements. The mechanical working and laser treatment as well as pressure die casting and hot extrusion are discussed. The tables contain characteristic dimensions of microelements obtained by means of the aforesaid methods. On the example of bistable foil valve the assembly of microvalve is described. The general problems connected with manufacturing and assembly of fluid microelements are discussed.

W pracy scharakteryzowano różne metody wytwarzania i montażu stosowane w produkcji mikroelementów płynowych. Przedstawiono obróbkę mechaniczną, laserową, odlewanie podciśnieniowe i wyciskanie na gorąco. W tablicach zamieszczono charakterystyczne wymiary mikroelementów wykonywanych tymi metodami obróbki. Na przykładzie biostabilnego zaworu foliowego omówiono proces jego montażu. Omówiono ogólne problemy związane z procesem wytwarzania i montażu mikroelementów płynowych.
