Realia początku XXI wieku (przeludnienie miast, wysoka cena gruntów i gromadzenie kapitału w rękach prywatnych) doprowadziły do tworzenia wielkoskalowych obiektów, w których przeznaczenie mieszkaniowe zespolone jest z wachlarzem innych funkcji – „osiedli w budynku”, „miast w mieście” (realizacje m.in. MVRDV, BIG, Stevena Holla). Charakteryzują się one poszukiwaniem swoistej symboliki miejsca i tworzeniem przestrzeni w oparciu o nią; przestrzeni zrównoważonej w sensie społecznym i ekologicznym, a jednocześnie dostosowanej do potrzeb użytkownika, pozostającej z nim w dialogu – opowiadającej i odpowiadającej – przestrzeni narracyjnej. Po epoce funkcjonalnego miasta – maszyny i semiotycznego miasta – znaku, nadszedł czas miasta kinetycznego, w którym rzeczywistość jest tkanką zdarzeń, a architektura dyskursem o przestrzeniach i zdarzeniach.

Realities of the early twenty-first century (overcrowded cities, high prices of land and the accumulation of capital in private hands) have led to the creation of objects comprising residential purpose with other functions – “residential complexes in a building”, “cities in a city” (the projects of MVRDV, BIG, Steven Holl, and others). They are characterized by an attempt to search for the specific symbolism of place and to create a space based on it. The space sustainable in the social and environmental meaning, simultaneously adapted to its user’s needs and remaining with him in a dialogue – speaking and answering – the narrative space. After the era of a functional machine – town and a semiotic sign – city it’s the time of a kinetic city, where reality is the tissue of events and architecture – the discourse of spaces and events.

Przestrzeń miejska jest wielowarstwowym i wielofunkcyjnym lustrem teraźniejszości. Architektura miejska to wizualizację kluczowych problemów epoki. Architekci i urbaniści w sposób coraz bardziej świadomy uczestniczą w dyskusjach, które toczą się na pograniczu współczesnej filozofii i estetyki, gdyż dotyczą one elementarnych dla nich zagadnień. Dzięki swojemu doświadczeniu wnoszą oni do tej dyskusji interesujące argumenty formułowane we własnym języku. Artykuł ten będzie poświęcony zdarzeniu, rozumianemu jako stworzenie nowych możliwości doświadczania przestrzeni miejskich, przejściu od koncepcji miasta statycznego do wizji miasta kinetycznego. Pod wpływem teorii fizyków i filozofów dokonała się zmiana w myśleniu urbanistycznym i architektonicznym. Powstało przekonanie, że architektura, podobnie jak przepływ ludzi i obrazów, ma być elementem kinetycznym miasta, że podstawą myślenia o architekturze nie jest ani forma, ani styl, lecz zdarzenie. W architekturze rozumianej jako zdarzenie w przestrzeni miejskiej zanika dystans między budynkiem a użytkownikiem, co sprawia, że jeden staje się częścią drugiego.

The urban space is a multistratified and multifunctional mirror of the present; the urban architecture constitutes a visualization of key problems of each epoch. Architects and town planners with increasing awareness engage in the debates that take place at the borderland of contemporary philosophy, aesthetics and new media studies. The locus of the debate and the declarations made by the various parts concern the issues that are of a fundamental significance for them. They have necessary experience and can enrich the debate with some interesting arguments formulated in their own language. This paper will be concerned with the event considered as a creation of new opportunities for experiencing urban space; with the transition from the concept of a city as a static entity to the vision of a city as a kinetic entity. The main shift in thinking of town planners and architects, inspired by the theories of physicists and philosophers, consists in the belief, that apart from the flow of people and images, also architecture is a kinetic component of the city; that it is the event - and not form or style - that is the basis for thinking about architecture. In architecture considered as an event taking place in the urban space there disappears the distance between the building and its resident; they become a part of each other.
