A coast-down test is carried out in cases when there is a need for the exact expression of the forces acting on a road vehicle during its coast-down. These forces act mainly against the vehicle’s movement due to air and tyre rolling resistance. Knowledge of the course of these forces throughout the vehicle’s movement range is also a requirement when measuring fuel consumption with a roller performance dynamometer. The reason is that this device has to load the rollers by force or performance corresponding to the given vehicle, while testing it during various driving cycles. For approval purposes, the requirements for this type of test are described in the applicable regulations, i.e., UNECE Regulations No. 83 and No. 101, or the newly developed Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). Slovak Technical Standard STN 30 0556 also contains detailed procedures for carrying out the test. The authors of this paper have taken into account both types of technical regulations in order to conduct coast-down tests on chosen vehicles. The results are usable in terms of measuring fuel consumption on a roller dynamometer. Furthermore, the vehicle’s economic performance in normal operation mode can be also assumed with these results.

W pracy została podjęta problematyka zmiany oporu toczenia kół jednych samochodu w zależności od typu nawierzchni drogowej. Przeprowadzono badania eksperymentalne samochodu ciężarowego podczas jazdy po różnych nawierzchniach drogowych. Podczas badań wyznaczano charakterystyki wybiegu pojazdu. Na podstawie utworzonych charakterystyk wybiegu wyznaczono długości drogi wybiegu oraz uśrednione wartości współczynnika oporu toczenia kół pojazdu. Oceniono wpływ typu nawierzchni drogowej na uzyskane wartości współczynnika oporu toczenia kół pojazdu oraz wynikające z tego zmiany zużycia paliwa.

The paper shows the issue of changing the rolling resistance of the car wheels depending on the type of road surface. The experimental study was performed on a truck whilst driving on different road surfaces. During the research vehicle coast-down characteristics have been created. Based on established vehicle coast-down characteristics were estimated the length of the road and average values of rolling resistance coefficient of the wheels. It was estimated how big had been the influence of the type of road surface on the received values of the coefficient of rolling resistance of the vehicle wheels and changes of the fuel consumption.

W opracowaniu zastosowano metodę Gaussa do określania błędu obliczeń współczynnika oporów toczenia samochodów osobowych metodą wybiegu ze stałą prędkością. Na przykładzie zaprezentowano znaną metodę wyznaczania współczynnika oporów aerodynamicznych w zastosowaniu do opracowanej metody.

Presented paper showed utilizing of the Gauss method for the define the coefficient of the rolling resistance of the personal autos with the method of freedom go down. As the example was presented the method for define the coefficient of aerodynamical resistance with utilizing the additional measure.

W opracowaniu przedstawiono metodę określania współczynnika oporów toczenia samochodów osobowych metodą wybiegu ze stałą prędkością z wykorzystaniem jezdni o stałym wzdłużnym pochyleniu. Zaletą metody jest jej uniwersalność oraz ograniczone wymagania względem aparatury pomiarowej, natomiast wadą: konieczność dokładnego określenia kąta pochylenia wzdłużnego dostatecznie długiego odcinka jezdni metodami geodezyjnymi.

In this paper the method of calculating of the roiling resistance coefficient ft in the passenger cars by the coasting at constant speed method on the road characterized by constant road grade have been shown. This method is very universal and isn't very demanding with reference to measuring apparatus, which is its main advantage. Unfortunately it is necessary to determine very precisely the road grade by the geodetic methods, which is its the main disadvantage.

W pracy zestawiono wyniki obliczeń współczynnika oporów toczenia metodą wybiegu ze stałą prędkością zjazdu 132 samochodów osobowych w funkcji średnicy obręczy, wysokości i szerokości opony, marki samochodu i prędkości jazdy oraz porównano je z wynikami badań laboratoryjnych.

The results of the calculations of the rolling resistance coefficient were presented in this paper. The calculations were carried out by the coasting at constant speed method for 132 cars. The dependence of values of the rolling resistance coefficient on diameter, width and height of tyre were shown. Moreover the results were compared to results received from laboratory test on rolls with rough surface.
