Observations of ninety road landslides were carried out in 1998-2002 in Podkarpacie area. Landslides of natural subsoil part (slopes of various inclination) were most often observed together with part of the road embankment. The exemplary landslide in Niedźwiada village (Podkarpacie province, Ropczyce district) has been chosen. For this landslide, strength of subsoil and of road embankment at limit state of general stability has been determined using the back analysis method. From laboratory testing of the slope and embankment material, the plastic limit Wp = 18,0% and the liquid limit WL = 39,5% have been established. Loss of embankment stability in MES model occurs at water content Wn = 27,0%. In case of this material, relatively small change of moisture content leads to high increase of the liquidity index of soil and next to loss of road embankment stability.
