Information criteria used in statistics for model selection can be used to accurately determine pulse transition times in transmission methods. The most popular information criteria are the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and the Bayesian Schwartz Criterion (BIC). These criteria are considered the most reliable tests of model type and structure and are computationally simple. In this paper, an algorithm developed according to the AIC criterion is used to determine the transition time from transmission tomography measurements acquired with a multi-element ultrasonic ring array, which is the scanning element of the novel prototype of ultrasound tomography device for detecting and estimating the malignancy of female breast cancer in vivo. As a result, a new algorithm was developed to precise search for the onset of the recorded receiving pulse. The algorithm was tested in an aqueous environment using elementary pairs of transmitting and receiving ultrasonic transducers of a tomographic ring array.

Opisano dwie metody elastooptyczne, pozwalające na określanie trójwymiarowych rozkładów naprężeń w materiałach polimerowych. Metoda transmisyjna (rys. 1 i 2) wykorzystuje występowanie symetrii w badanych materiałach do odtworzenia stanu naprężeń ze zmian polaryzacji światła przechodzącego. Druga z metod, rozproszeniowa (rys. 6 i 7), nie wymaga symetrii, ale ze względu na małe zmiany intensywności światła rozproszonego w obszarach naprężonych trzeba stosować czułą aparaturę pomiarową i odpowiednio przygotować badany materiał. Pokazano przykłady zastosowania obu metod do określania rozkładów naprężeń w żywicach epoksydowych zawierających wtrącenia i poddawanych działaniu różnych sil (rys. 3, 4, 5, 8).

Two photoelastic methods are described, viz., the transmission method (Figs. 1, 2) that avails itself of symmetry of the system to reconstruct the stressed state from light polarization variations, and the scattered light method (Figs. 6, 7) in which symmetry is not required. However, the small variations of scattered light intensity in the stressed area require sensitive instruments and specially prepared samples to be used in measurements. Each method was applied to determine the distribution of stresses in variously stressed epoxy resin blocks containing inclusions and subjected to variotis forces (Figs. 3-5, 8).
