The term "simplified second order plastic hinge analysis" describes a modified version of the first order plastic hinge analysis, in which the P-Delta effect associated with geometrical non-linearity of analysed sway planar frames is accounted for. The weakening effect of the system static response can be taken into account either by increasing the horizontal loads or by reducing the load carrying capacity of its members. In the first method, the horizontal nodal loads are being systematically increased by a quotient that depends on the degradation ratio of the system second order stiffness matrix. The quotient is recalculated at each incremental step on the basis of stability analysis of the "deteriorated" frame. An advantage of the developed method is that no iterations are required at each incremental step of analysis, so that the simplified second order analysis is characterised by computational complexity similar to that of the conventional first-order analysis. An illustrative example is presented and the results compared with the conventional first order plastic hinge analysis and with second-order plastic hinge analyses.
