The study, which is shortly described in the following paragraphs, demonstrates potential of the SBRA (Simulation-Based Reliability Assessment) method (see e.g. [1], [2]) in probabilistic serviceability assessment of a simply supported reinforced concrete one-way slab (see Fig. 1). Acting loads, consisted of dead load and imposed load, are causing vertical deflection of the slab. The goal is to assess vertical deflections of the slab.

Proposed application of the SBRA (Simulation-Based Reliability Assessment) method, documented e.g. in [1], [2] demonstrates its potential in durability analysis of reinforced concrete beam situated in a such environment leading to a carbonation of the concrete. In a certain time, the carbonation front reaches the reinforcement and the corrosion process of the reinforcement starts. The reliability of the beam from the viewpoint of bending is evaluated.

In the field of structural design increasing attention has being given to the development and application of new progressive methods allowing for complex reliability assessment of structures with consideration time-dependent effects. One of these powerful methods allowing this complex reliability analysis is SBRA method. The potential of this method is briefly outlined on example of a steel component exposed to time-dependent corrosion effects.

The dramatic development of the computer technology allows to consider a transition from current structural reliability assessment methods developed in the pre-computer era, such as Partial Factors Method applied in Eurocodes, to probabilistic methods using simulation technique and the increasing potential of the available computers to its full. The paper briefly indicates the basics of a qualitatively new Simulation-Based Reliability Assessment Method, SBRA, applicable in the design and in codes. Hundreds of solved examples are available in the textbooks referred later in this paper (see also www.noise.cz/SBRA). Considering the application of SBRA, the paper turns attention to the substance of the reliability assessment of safety and serviceability of components and structures containing semi-rigid joints. Using pilot examples, the response of selected types of joints exposed to load combination is indicated, the reference values applied in the calculation of the probability of failure are defined and the analysis of the reliability function using simulation technique and leading to the calculation of the probability of failure Pf is indicated. The procedures and the results obtained according to the SBRA method and to the Eurocode EC3 are compared and discussed. Future studies on probabilistic reliability assessment of structure containing semi-rigid joints are indicated.
