The article discusses methods for determining top dead center, based on the analysis of pressure diagrams of a marine engine. The advantages and disadvantages of different methods are shown. Diagnostics of marine engines during operation and the selection of optimal operating conditions is based on the analysis of gas pressure diagrams, as well as fuel supply and gas distribution diagrams. As a result of the analysis of the pressure diagrams, the indicator engine power is calculated, which is further used in the management of engine operation modes, in the calculation of specific indicators, as well as in the calculation of energy efficiency coefficients of marine vessels according to International Maritime Organization recommendations. The influence of the accuracy of determining the position of the top dead center on the calculation of the mean indicated pressure and indicator power is shown. The authors considered a method for determining top dead center, based on the solution of the equation P’= 0, which provides the required accuracy in calculating the mean indicated pressure and indicator power of the engine during operation. It is shown that the method can be applicable in marine engine working process monitoring systems as an alternative to hardware methods for determining the top dead center.

The paper presents algorithms for marine diesel engines’ working process monitoring designed by analyzing data obtained with IMES pressure sensors. Main features and properties of IMES sensors, used for 2- and 4-stroke modern marine diesel engines, are presented here. The pressure-time diagrams were taken as a basis for creating algorithms for marine diesel engines’ working process monitoring. The task of preliminary calculation of top dead center position (TDC) of a cylinder was solved using polytropic compression equation. TDC position was calculated using the equation P' = 0. Then algorithm for calculating the average indicator pressure and the indicator power of the cylinder has been determined. The CFD methods show how indicator valve channel influences the results of marine diesel engines’ working process monitoring. With the example of compression curves in a cylinder, it’s shown amplitude and phase distortions introduced into pressure measurements by the indicator valve channel. Such research work is important and actual in time due to the use of marine diesel portable performance analysis systems.

Artykuł przedstawia możliwości oceny stanu technicznego okrętowego tłokowego silnika spalinowego z wykorzystaniem do tego celu średniego ciśnienia indykowanego na biegu jałowym. Praca została oparta na szerokim materiale badawczym, zebranym podczas diagnostyki silników na okrętach w latach 1997–2018, w której autor uczestniczył osobiście. W artykule zasygnalizowano problemy związane z tą oceną oraz przedstawiono metodykę badań.

The article presents possibilities of assessment of technical condition of a marine diesel engine using the mean indicated idle pressure. The paper was based on wide research material collected during engine diagnostics operated on naval ships from 1997 to 2018. The author was a member of diagnostic team conducting researches. The article shows problems related to this assessment and presents research methodology.

Podczas indykowania okrętowego tłokowego silnika spalinowego wyznacza się obok innych parametrów również średnie ciśnienie indykowane i moc indykowaną silnika. Indykując silnik na biegu jałowym uzyskuje się miary strat mechanicznych w zbliżonych do rzeczywistych warunkach pracy silnika. W celu określenia jego przydatności do celów diagnostycznych należy uzależnić go m.in. od lepkości oleju smarowego. Artykuł zawiera próbę opisania zależności pomiędzy stratami mechanicznymi a lepkością oleju smarowego.

During indication of marine diesel engine a lot of parameters are measured, some of them are the mean indicated pressure and indicated power of engine. Indication on idle running allows to determine mechanical loses in almost real engine operating conditions. In order to determine its suitability for diagnostic purposes it should be connected to the viscosity of the lubricating oil. The article presents an attempt to describe the relationship between mechanical losses and the viscosity of lubricating oil.

Possibilities of indicated pressure measurements using to asses mean indicated pressure of RIC engines has been presented in this paper. Looking at the RIC engine as a generalized friction centre, we could say that mechanical losses may be used as a tool to asses its technical condition. Mean indicated pressure on idle speed is as a fact equal to mean pressure of a mechanical losses and it is enough to make diagnosis about technical state of the engine cylinder-piston groups and bearings. But to make the diagnosis more accurate it is necessary to analyze mean pressure of mechanical losses as a function of lubricating oil viscosity.

The paper presents methods for processing and analysis of in-cylinder pressure course in the combustion chamber of marine engines. In literature are described determinate methods ofmean indicator pressure from closed diagrams, with are but rarely recorded than developed diagrams. There have been showed on limitations occurrence at measurements fast-changed pressures of marine diesel engines in operating conditions and measuring errors the attendants. Mean indicated pressure determined from the indicated timing or angular pressure courses in the cylinders is still a reliable diagnostic symptom. The paper presents too the results of experimental measurement of in-cylinder pressure signals, medium speed marine engines with application resistive sensor and using the photo-optical sensor of crankshaft position, and without the marker position of the crankshaft. Not always possible to altach the marker for the position of the crankshaft, and even there is no way of stopping the engine when you need to diagnose it. The top dead centre of the piston can be determined then analytically. The work developed a method of determining the mean indicated pressure of the developed indicator diagrams. Based on calculations ofmean indicator pressure made many of diagnosis of the medium speed marine diesel engines in the operating conditions.

W artykule omówiono możliwości wykorzystania wyników pomiarów ciśnień indykowanych do wyznaczania średniego ciśnienia indykowanego silników tłokowych. Traktując tłokowy silnik spalinowy jako uogólniony węzeł tarcia, straty mechaniczne silnika odzwierciedlają jego stan techniczny. Wyznaczenie średniego ciśnienia indykowanego silnika na biegu jałowym będącego w istocie średnim ciśnieniem strat mechanicznych pozwala sformułować diagnozę o stanie technicznym układu tłok - pierścienie tłokowe - tuleja cylindrowa oraz o łożyskowaniu silnika. Jednak, aby diagnoza była wiarygodna konieczne jest przedstawienie średniego ciśnienia strat mechanicznych jako funkcji lepkości oleju smarowego. Zaprezentowano także wyniki badań diagnostycznych wybranych silników okrętowych eksploatowanych na okrętach Marynarki Wojennej RP.

In this paper we study the course of mean indicated pressure of running up of diesel engine. Using method of neural networks. Four models of neural networks were obtained. Influence of crankshaft speed and acceleration was taken into consideration. The results may be useful to develop effective control strategies for efficient engine performance.
