In the collection of Łódź Book Art Museum, among the stored exhibits, unused matrices for casting fonts from before World War II have been discovered unexpectedly. Library and archival research, as well as comparative graphic research were carried out to determine the typeface provenance. It was established that the typeface family called Brygada was made in the Warsaw type foundry Jan Idźkowski and Co. on the occasion of the anniversary of Poland’s independence in1918. The Museum has prepared a casting machine for casting fonts from preserved matrices, and at the same time a team of graphic designers has digitized, supplemented the character set, and expanded the typeface family under the name Brygada 2018. Computer fonts were made available as public domain.

Die-casting is the most cost efficient and technical easy method of casting sophisticated and accurate aluminium alloys parts in great-scale series. Aluminium alloys die-castings require little machining prior the final installation. Die-casting dies for casting of aluminium alloys fail because of a great number of different and simultaneously operating factors. Die design, material selection, and thermal stress fatigue generated by the cyclic working process, as well as to low and inhomogeneous initial die temperature contribute to the failures and cracks formation on/in dies for die-casting of aluminium alloys. In the frame of the presented investigation work the intensity and homogeneity of the temperature, fields on the working surface of the testing die were checked through thermo graphic measurements, and failures and cracks on the working surface of the die were analysed with nondestructive metallographic examination methods.

EN
Silver, silver alloys, as well as matrix based composites have been well known and applied in the electrotechnical and electronics industry for several decades. For many applications in electrotechnology, including electric contacts and brushes, unreinforced sliver alloys do not meet the requirements concerning mainly durability and wear resistance, first of all to tribological and electroerosive wear. These wear processes may be prevented by introducing to silver reinforcement particles. It can be stated, comparing recorded friction coefficient values of all investigated materials, that in the dry sliding conditions the ceramic particles introduction into matrix has its effect on the friction coefficient value lowering. If metallic particles are used as reinforcement, and in the investigated composites iron particles were used, the friction coefficient increases its value comparing to the matrix.
