The paper presents the method to characterize progress in combustion in the internal combustion spark ignited engine on the basis of volume-pressure-crank angle data. Main combustion phases as CA0-10, CA10-90 and a parameter CA50 are proposed to be computed on the basis of Energy Conservation Law from normalized cumulative heat released. Additionally, computation of specific heat ratio (cp/cv) was also conducted and obtained results led to conclusion that impact of error in determining the cp/cv on normalized profile of the cumulative heat is negligible. Thus, polytrophic index from engine compression stroke might be applied instead of the cp/cv ratio, which is troublesome in calculation. Following the presented computational method, combustion phases CA0-10 and CA10-90, and also the center of combustion CA50 are charged with marginal relative errors.
