Purpose: The aim of the article is to present changes in the use and basic advantages of social networks in communication of local government units on the example of cities in the Lodz voivodeship. Design/methodology/approach: The study consisted in analysing the content of the official websites belonging to the local governments of the individual cities of the Łódzkie Voivodeship in order to see how information on the social networks used (location of plug-ins) is made available and a review of active profiles on these sites was carried out in order to diagnose what content is published. The survey was conducted in December 2022. The results were cross¬referenced with the corresponding survey carried out in 2019 and 2020. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version). Findings: The study showed that out of the 44 cities analysed in the Łódzkie Voivodship, 42 use at least one social networking site. The most common is Facebook - 42 cities have a profile, followed by YouTube - 25, Instagram - 14 and Twitter 7. 3 cities have profiles on 4 sites at the same time, 11 have 3 official profiles on different social networking sites, while another 15 cities have 2 and 13 have one each. For 2 cities, no profiles were found on social networks. The content and frequency of publication on the profiles varies. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version). Research limitations/implications: The study did not take into consideration social networks which were less popular at the time of writing (e.g. TikTok - among the cities surveyed, only Łódź has an official profile there). The objectives of the communication activities of individual cities are not known. This may be part of further research through in-depth interviews with those responsible for promoting the cities. It is also possible to extend the research to cities of other voivodships and among the target recipients of communication activities in particular sites. Practical implications: On the basis of the author's audit of the communication activity of cities in the Łódzkie Voivodship on social networking sites, this article suggests that the use of social media is an appropriate tactic in cities' communication, both in the external promotional dimension and in communication with citizens due to the participatory, interactive and open nature of social media. Originality/value: The publication presents the results of research carried out on the basis of the author's audit of the activity of the cities of the Lodz voivodship in the social media.

Purpose: Analysis of the literature on the subject in the field of territorial marketing, promotion and communication of the local government unit with the environment. Identification of manners to promote cities based on the observation of such activities. Design/methodology/approach: The article is a review of the literature on promotional activities. Findings: The main problem of the work was to answer the question whether promotion plays a communicative function of territorial marketing for social development. The answer to the question is confirmative, because promotion plays one of the most important roles in the marketing activities of local government units. In the case of tourism areas, tourism promotion is of particular importance, as it is part of the economic promotion of local governments, whose task is to improve the living conditions of the local community. Research limitations/implications: The text refers to a limited number of studies. The issues presented in the article require empirical confirmation on a larger number of examples. Practical implications: The conducted analysis allows to conclude that the concept of managing settlement units must include promotional activities that allow the achievement of the intended strategic goals. Originality/value: The conclusions presented in the paper are an extension of the threads present in the literature on the subject, indicating the mutual relations between territorial marketing and promotion for the development of tourism.

The European Union currently uses Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) as basic units for planning local development activities under its financial support. An important issue in terms of managing such areas is branding. FUAs are made of at least several territorial units (covering a dense urban area and a functionally related urbanised zone). Such composition poses a particular challenge in terms of developing a brand that covers all of the units. Therefore, it is essential to select the core around which the target image will be created. This publication aims to identify marketing and branding goals for the development of FUAs and determine activities facilitating the achievement of these goals by entities that manage the functional areas. The research method used in the article was a content analysis of documents outlined as Strategies for Integrated Territorial Investments developed for FUAs in Poland. The authors of the article undertook preliminary exploratory research. The obtained results show that most of the marketing and branding goals for the development of FUAs correspond with the objectives specific to city marketing and branding. Moreover, “integration” and “strengthening the metropolitan area function” were recognised as goals specific to FUAs.

Kampania Miasta Sprawiedliwego Handlu (Fairtrade Town - FTT) po raz pierwszy została zainicjowana w angielskim mieście Garstand w 2000 r. w celu promocji produktów marki Fairtrade.

Buildings, or architectural structures, are this component of city space, which relatively fastly wears away. From these causes it is exchanged, contributing new formal features, appropriate for time of rising. The closer to modern times the more universal and global is character of architectural forms. The attitude of modern architects towards cultural context is object of individual interpretation and in consequence - different creative decision. Beside conservative attitude, from conservative imitation, through retroversions, for more free postmodernistic dialog with surroundings, there are also conceptual standpoints omitting locality, tradition and continuation. Paradoxically, many of architectonic forms controversial in moment of build, criticized for lack of connection with spatial context, become the icon of city and symbol of certain period in its evolution.
