In the shadow of discoveries of large deposits of mineral resources in Poland after World War II, intensive exploration works were carried out, but the results of this research did not bring such spectacular effects. Exploration of Zn-Pb deposits conducted in the vicinity of historic deposits of Tarnowskie Góry and Bytom led to documentation of the Zawiercie, Goluchowice and Marciszów deposits. With some successes, exploration works of metal ore deposits in Paleozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks of the NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were carried out. In this area, the Myszków Mo-W-Cu mineral deposit was confirmed, representing the porphyry copper genetic type. Moreover, in the area of Mrzyglód, the promising mineralization zone was found, requiring further geological research. The exploration of uranium and rare earth element ores did not lead to documentation of the deposits, nevertheless they made it possible to recognize all geological structures in Poland in terms of the possibility of occurrence of ore deposit occurrence of these metals. The prospecting works for these goals was carried out with a relatively small scale and were limited of the Sudetes, where exploitation took place on a fairly large scale in the past (Zloty Stok, Radzimowice, Klecza-Radomice, Wądroże Wielkie). The gold concentration occurring in the Zechstein Kupferschiefer formation and the porphyry copper mineralisation in NE margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were also studied. The PGI participated in the exploration of mineral resources in marine areas, where besides the hydrocarbon exploration in the Polish economic zone, research on the Baltic polymetallic nodules was carried out, and within the INTEROCEANMETAL consortium the raw material potential of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific was studied.

The present study summarizes the data on the continuous stratigraphic sequence of foraminiferal assemblages from the Volgian deposits of the south-east of Western Siberia. Microfaunal analyses of 650 core samples from 18 boreholes of Volgian deposits were performed. Eighty two foraminiferal species, identified from the samples, were combined into the Volgian assemblages. On the basis of these assemblages, four biostratigraphic units were established in the range of foraminiferal zones and foraminiferal beds with characteristic species. These biostratigraphic units correspond to the upper part of the Kimmeridgian/ lower part of the Volgian, the Middle Volgian (lowermost and uppermost beds), and the Upper Volgian. A detailed biostratigraphic analysis of the Volgian beds was carried out, which enabled a correlation scheme to be developed for major regions of Russia. West-Siberian foraminiferal assemblages were correlated with those of Europe and North America within the Panboreal Superrealm. The species composition of foraminiferal assemblages was analyzed, and correlatable species ere established. This provided an opportunity to correlate coeval strata from Western Siberia, East European (Russian) Platform, northern territories of Siberia and Arctic Islands, Canada, Spitsbergen and England. The possibility was established for correlating Volgian-Tithonian deposits of the Panboreal and Tethys-Panthalassa Superrealms through the Dnieper-Donets Basin where faunas of both southern and Boreal-Arctic types are met.

W regionie gdańskim występują następujące, charakterystyczne cechy pokrywy czwartorzędowej: (1) Deniwelacje pomiędzy najniżej leżącym czwartorzędem i jego najwyższym położeniem osiągają ponad 600 m. (2) W obszarze delty Wisły występują dwa, a może i trzy poziomy różnowiekowych osadów morskich: holsztyński (?), eemski i holoceński (morze litorynowe transgresji atlantyckiej). (3) W profilu ostatniego zlodowacenia występują dwa pokłady glacjalne, datowane m. in. metodą termoluminescencji. Starszy około 61- ok.8 ka BP i młodszy ok. 20 - 12 ka BP. (4) Maksymalna w Polsce miąższość holocenu (głównie osady morskie i jeziorne), wynosząca przynajmniej 100 m na Półwyspie Helskim.

In the Gdańsk region the following specific features of Quaternary cover occur: Denivelations between the Quaternary base and present-day surface achieve more than 600 m. In the Vistula delta plain there are preserved traces of 2 (or even 3) Pleistocene marine transgressions (of Hohteinian?, Eemian, and Holocene or Atlantic or Littorina age). The Vistulian sequence consists of two glacial episodes dated by TL metod: older about 61-58 ka BP, and younger at 20-12 ka BP. Thickest Holocene deposits in Poland (mainly marine and limnic sequence), exceeding 100 m in the Hel Spit.
