Manor parks and gardens in Poznań – problems and potential

In the 20th century Poznań extended its limits and annexed many manor farms surrounding the historical city. At present the residences, parks and gardens which used to be part of manor farms are an element of the city landscape. Some of them still exist but others were degraded. This paper focuses on the condition of historical manor parks and gardens in Poznań, their problems and difficulties and methods of their use and protection in a modern city.

Poznań, poszerzając swoje granice, wchłonął wiele majątków otaczających historyczne miasto. Związane z nimi założenia rezydencjonalno-parkowe w zróżnicowany sposób funkcjonują dzisiaj w przestrzeni i krajobrazie miasta. Część parków i ogrodów podworskich nadal istnieje, inne uległy degradacji. Należy zadać pytanie o ich dzisiejszą kondycję. Zapytać o problemy i możliwości ich wykorzystania, a także ich ochronę we współczesnym mieście.

Zespół dworsko-parkowy w Romanowie jest siedzibą rodową rodziny Kraszewskich. W chwili obecnej zabytkowy dwór wraz z trzyhektarowym parkiem pełni funkcję Muzeum Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie historii oraz stanu zachowania zespołu rezydencjonalnego, jego przekształceń ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem obiektów małej architektury towarzyszących całości. Do czasów obecnych na terenie parku zachowały się bowiem dwa tego typu obiekty budowlane, którymi są kaplica parkowa fundacji Konstancji Mochorowskiej z 1810 roku oraz eklektyczna brama wjazdowa datowana na pierwszą połowę XIX wieku. W artykule przytoczone zostaną także opisy nieistniejących już obiektów parkowych między innymi neogotyckiej cieplarni oraz samotnej chaty stanowiącej niegdyś element romantycznego założenia.

The Romanów complex is home of Kraszewski family. At the moment, the historic mansion works as the Museum of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The purpose of this article is to present the history and state of preservation of the residential complex, its transformation with special emphasis on objects of landscape architecture. To the present day two objects of small architecture exist in this residential complex. There are park chapel founded by Constance Mochorowska and eclectic gate dating from the first half of the nineteenth century. The article will present state of preservation of this objects and descriptions of park buildings that no longer exist: the neo-gothic greenhouse and lonely hut once constituting as an element of the romantic park.

In western‐pomeranian Myślibórz commune 20 ex‐manor parks are located. They have differentiated characteristics, present state and ownership status. Parks were created as a part of manor complexes in 1st half of 19th c. and have landscape character. They have also some common composition elements like huge plane trees, chestnuts and beech specimens, hornbeam hedgerows and alleys, lime gazebos. Manors generally are in bad state or are ruined. Despite of their national monument status, almost all objects are in bad state after years without proper care and dissapearing of original role. Summary of invenatisation prepared for 7 most valuable parks is presented in paper as well as preliminary concepts of revitalisation works planned by commune autorities. Restoring of important role for local community is consedered as kay factor in developement plans tohether with preparation complex developement plan for parks owned by commune.

Many manor parks are to be found in Lower Silesia countryside. Within the suburban communes, as: Długołęka, Prusice, Sobótka situated nearby Wrocław, almost 50% of the villages still have the manor parks. They are mostly overgrown and neglected by their post-war users, such as schools or the agricultural cooperatives. After the socio-political transformation from the early 1990s, the private persons have started to buy the better preserved parks, which are recently well maintained. The new types of devastation derive from the vast sprawl of the housing areas. The architectural forms of the buildings are often inspired by historical shapes and details of the neighbouring palaces, although the visual effects of highly differentiated houses grouped on the small sites can be estimated as far from the expectations of the owners. The paper points at the difficulties in combining the short-term economic and social goals with the requirements of greenery preservation and maintenance.
