The paper presents an innovative steering system for a river push barge dedicated for operation in environmentally sensitive inland waterways. Development of the inland waterborne transport in Poland is dependent on the exploitation of rivers which can be adapted to navigation in the limited range because a high percent of their length is classified within special environment protection areas of Natura 2000 network. This is now the main reason that their better exploitation cannot be obtained without an introduction of a new generation of waterborne environment friendly inland units. In naturally winding rivers with differing and rapidly changing depths and widths it is important to equip a push barge with an efficient steering system that has a low environmental impact. The innovative steering system proposed in the paper is composed of main steering devices located at the pusher stern, auxiliary steering devices installed on the barge bow and a mechanical coupling system.

The aim of the following article is to analyse the lying of a vessel at anchor in extreme hydrometeorological conditions. As an example it describes the situation of the Panamax type bulk carrier anchoring in Prince Rupert harbour restricted area. The investigation takes into consideration the impact of strong wind on the safety of anchoring in sheltered waters. The presented calculations concern problems of slewing which result in changes of heading. The analysis also includes a description of the wind and current forces. The final part focuses on conclusions whose aim is to improve anchoring safety standards in areas managed by harbour authorities.

The paper presents the accuracy of five analytical and one simulation methods used for dimensioning the safety waterways for maneuvering vessels. The accuracy of above methods has been estimated on the basis of results obtained from the real experiments. The analysis of accuracy enables to assess the usefulness of above mentioned methods and their applicability to waterways designing.

The paper presents possible methods of dimensioning manoeuvring water area which take into account the GNSS accuracy factor. Based on real experiment measurements in Świnoujście harbour the comparison of manoeuvring areas' dimensions by methods with and without allowance for measurements' biases has been made. The precedence of these methods in respect of their reliability has been proposed.

Przedstawiono metodę oceny kryterów bezpieczeństwa nawigacji dla wybranego toru wodnego przy pomocy synchronicznych pomiarów dwoma odbiornikami DGPS. Eksperyment badawczy został przeprowadzony w porcie w Świnoujściu. Analizie poddano dostępność satelitów w ciągu 24h obserwacji (cykl zmiany konstelacji). Oceniono wpływ konfiguracji satelitarnej na dokładność pozycji i jej ciągłość na krytycznych odcinkach toru wodnego. W rezultacie badań zaproponowano metodę wyznaczenia pasa ruchu statku o zadanym poziomie ufności na podstawie zarejestrowanych pomiarów DGPS, w celu weryfikacji obszaru bezpiecznego akwenu manewrowego.

The paper presents a method of evaluating navigation safety criteria for the specified waterway by means of two DGPS receivers recording synchronised data. The research experiment was performed in Świnoujście harbour (Poland). Availability of satellites during several 24h periods (cycle of a constellation change) was analysed and its impact on position accuracy and integrity in the critical harbour's areas was evaluated. Finally a method of ship's swept path at specified confidence level, based on the on-board recorded positions ' data, was proposed for verification of the safe manoeuvring area.
