Minimizing the injury risk to passengers in frontal crash situations represents the superior goal of the car structure engineering. In contrast to the existing systems, the use of a degressive front car structure can improve the crash performance. This paper presents a finite element modelling method allowing to study the influence of the force-displacement curve of the main chassis beam on the crash performance with respect to the passenger injury risk. A solution for realizing a degressive main chassis beam was tested in a drop tower. The result shows that the constructed main chassis beam works, and that it significantly reduces the injury risk to the passenger.
