The worldwide expected growth in energy consumption can be satisfied in large extend using renewable energies, especially the sun and wind energy. Because the wind doesn't always blow and the sun doesn't always shine, for the balancing the energy demand and generation the storage technology of the renewable energies must be developed. One of the most promising storage technology in this case is the hydro pumped plant (HPP). However, this technology requires a significant amount of land and water for the upper and lower reservoirs and above all, the significant height difference between the reservoirs. These technical requirements limit a large-scale utilization of above-ground hydro pump plants as the energy storage. To solve this problem and to manage the variability of the wind power, a transdisciplinary group of researchers of Energie-Forschungszentrum Niedersachsen (EFZN) at Clausthal University of Technology (CUT) investigate, if the abandoned mines can be used for the pump-storage hydroelectricity. The technical, energy and environmental aspects of the underground hydro pumped plant are discussed in the paper.
