Machine failures in each production system cause an increase in costs and delays in order execution. Therefore, companies decide to introduce solutions that detect and immediately remove worrying symptoms before more serious consequences occur. Unfortunately, not all failures can be avoided – in such cases, the most important thing is the quick reaction of machine operators, maintenance and production managers. This paper identifies reliability indicators and presents the steps and effects of implementing selected KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), which aim at the production process. For the machines in which a failure occurred in the surveyed period, technical availability, Mean Times Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Down Time (MDT), technical object readiness, and the downtime coefficient were calculated.

Głównym celem artykułu jest przeprowadzenie krytycznej oceny możliwości wykorzystania uniwersalnych wskaźników efektywności maszyn i urządzeń w górnictwie węgla kamiennego. By tak postawiony cel zrealizować, artykuł podzielono na cztery części, obejmujące: (1) wprowadzenie z uzasadnieniem podjęcia niniejszej tematyki, (2) przegląd literaturowy z zakresu mierników wykorzystywanych w ocenie efektywności maszyn i urządzeń, (3) krytyczną ocenę możliwości wykorzystania zaprezentowanych wskaźników w górnictwie węgla kamiennego jako branży o specyficznych uwarunkowaniach produkcyjnych oraz (4) podsumowanie, zawierające kluczowe wnioski i kierunki dalszych badań. W artykule posłużono się metodą studiów literaturowych z obszaru efektywności maszyn i urządzeń oraz produkcyjnych uwarunkowań naturalnych, geologicznych i technicznych w górnictwie węgla kamiennego.

The main aim of the article is to critically evaluate the possibility of using universal indicators of the effectiveness of machinery and equipment in coal mining. To achieve such an aim, the authors have divided the article into four parts covering: (1) the introduction, including the justification for the specified subject of considerations, (2) the literature review in the field of measures used in assessing the effectiveness of machinery and equipment, (3) the critical assessment of the possibilities of using the presented indicators in coal mining, which is perceived as an industry with atypical production conditions, and (4) the summary containing key findings and directions for further research. The article has been developed based on literature studies in the area of the effectiveness of machinery and equipment, as well as in of natural, geological and technical conditions of hard coal excavation.
