Lotnictwo wojsk lądowych odegrało istotną rolę w operacji wojskowej wymierzonej w terrorystów działających w Afganistanie. W artykule przedstawiono specyfikę działań Samodzielnej Grupy Powietrzno-Szturmowej (SGPSz) w trudnych warunkach klimatycznych i uciążliwym pustynno-górzystym terenie Afganistanu. Scharakteryzowano organizację działania, zadania i wyposażenie tej Grupy w kontekście wyzwań misji w Afganistanie. Wskazano na rolę lotnictwa śmigłowcowego we wsparciu komponentu lądowego na terytorium konfliktu. Zwrócono uwagę na znaczenie pododdziału śmigłowcowego dla powodzenia misji, a także na jego ograniczenia. W końcowej części artykułu sformułowano wnioski, które mogą być przydatne w doskonaleniu zdolności lotnictwa wojsk lądowych Sił Zbrojnych RP do wykonywania zadań na współczesnym polu walki.

The army aviation played an important role in the military operation against terrorists operating in Afghanistan. The article presents the specificity of the Army Aviation Assault Detachment’s operations in difficult climatic conditions and the arduous desert and mountainous terrain of Afghanistan. The organization of operation, tasks and equipment of this detachment were characterized in the context of the challenges during the mission in Afghanistan. The role of helicopters in supporting the land component in the conflict territory was indicated. Attention was drawn to the importance of the helicopter detachment for the success of the mission, as well as to its limitations. In the final part of the article, conclusions were formulated that may be useful in improving the ability of the army aviation of the Polish Armed Forces to perform tasks on the modern battlefield.

Jednostki lotnictwa wojsk lądowych czekają duże zmiany. Wysłużony zasadniczy sprzęt wojskowy musi być stopniowo zastąpiony nowym, spełniającym wymogi pola walki. Modernizacja polegająca na wprowadzeniu nowych platform śmigłowców wymagać będzie zarówno wymiany sprzętu zabezpieczającego ich działanie, jak i zmian w organizacji funkcjonowania jednostek lotniczych. Autor analizuje potrzeby i oczekiwania Sił Zbrojnych RP związane z lotnictwem wojsk lądowych w aspekcie jego możliwości i zdolności wymaganych na współczesnym i przyszłym polu walki. Wskazuje kierunki zmian w strukturach organizacyjnych i sprzęcie wojskowym, które pozwoliłyby wyprzedzić ducha czasu i zwiększyć możliwości systemu obronnego kraju.

The Polish Army Aviation units are a day-ahead of great changes owing to the fact that their deteriorating and long-serving basic military equipment needs to be replaced gradually with the latest, state-of-the-art military gear in order to fulfil battlefield requirements. Introduction of new helicopter platforms in the course of the modernisation process will not only force changes in the operational support equipment, but above all, it will modify the organisation of functioning of such units. This article discusses the needs and expectations of the Polish Armed Forces in relation to army aviation concerning its possibilities and capacities in relation to the present and future battlefields; moreover, due to the presented suggestions regarding military organizational structures and combat equipment, it might be a direction on how to be ahead of time and how to strengthen the national defence system.

Military theoreticians and commanders stress the necessity to look for solutions to problems of conducting military operations in hostile environment such as urban terrain. Carrying out military operations in urban terrain may involve the risk of engaging in long lasting and costly fights resulting in many casualties among both soldiers and civilians and huge damage of buildings and infrastructure. Therefore fighting in such a specific environment will require close cooperation between armed forces’ branches which have detailed Information on the terrain characteristics and the enemy assets. A detailed analysis of combat environment will essentially influence the land forces aviation’s tactics, adequate to the tasks received. Helicopters supporting the land forces will conduct several tasks resulting from its purpose. They will mainly include air transport, airlift, combat support, reconnaissance and command. Helicopters’ tactical and flying capabilities, their equipment, armament and first of all the crews’ training will decide on the effectiveness of conducted tasks. The way these tasks are performed will be connected with the knowledge of the enemy’s strength and fire power. In order to be well prepared in future military operations conducted in urban terrain it seems necessary to carry out common trainings of land forces units and land forces aviation units taking into account coordination procedures which ensure effectiveness, security and safety while conducting common tasks in this environment.

Lotnictwo wojsk lądowych odgrywa istotną rolę w działaniach bojowych. O jego możliwościach decyduje przygotowanie załóg oraz potencjał logistyczny. Na potencjał logistyczny lotnictwa wojsk lądowych składają się możliwości realizacji funkcji logistycznych w obszarach lotniczym i ogólnowojskowym. Istotny problem stanowi wyznaczenie wzajemnych relacji określających składniki lotniczy ogólnowojskowy w potencjale.

Logistic potential of Army Air Forces includes possibilities to accomplish logistic functions in military and air area. The essential problem is to determine mutual relations in potential of air and military components.
