Data analytics and global logistics performance: an exploratory study of informatization in the logistics sector

Background: Informatization has enabled global logistics and supply chains (LSC) to capitalize on data-driven analytics to improve logistics performance. At the country level, logistics performance is gauged through the logistics performance index (LPI), where globally 61.25% or 98 countries perform below the mean LPI score. Previous studies focused on logistics informatization in high and moderate LPI rank economies. The paper aims to conduct an exploratory case study in a low LPI performing country to assess the informatization practices of logistics entities and develop a logistics informatization continuum to unlock data analytics for other countries. Methods: The study implements qualitative methods to develop strategic recommendations to reduce global logistics imbalance. We employ a two-layer methodology consisting of thematic analysis and a novel strategic choice approach (SCA) to involve stakeholders for recommendations on obstruction. For thematic analysis, 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted from logistics companies, also onboard 10 trade associations and government representatives for the SCA analysis. Results: We observed many obstructions in informatization; low willingness on informatization, fear of information leakage by humans, low-reciprocity for collaboration, the myth of information and communication technologies (ICT) as an expensive tool, self-interest, and opportunistic behavior. Conclusion: Information-centric and integrated LSC enables data-driven technologies for real-time decision making, vigilance, and data analytics to distinguished the success of a country’s logistics performance. Originality: This study explores the informatization conformity in the logistics sector to connect data analytics. We introduced a novel strategic choice approach in the technology domain for problem structuring. The paper further contributes by suggesting a logistics informatization continuum for low LPI countries to straighten digitalization in the logistics sector.

Obecny poziom efektywności dystrybucji i przepływu dóbr w łańcuchach dostaw, oraz sytuacja w obszarze globalnej logistyki pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Przejawia się to nie tylko w aspekcie ekonomicznym, ale również środowiskowym i społecznym. Mimo wielu prób optymalizacji procesów, producenci, a także operatorzy logistyczni, dystrybutorzy i finalni klienci nadal ponoszą bardzo wysokie koszty związane z obsługą towarów, a czas realizacji zamówień jest nadal zbyt długi w stosunku do oczekiwań odbiorców. Rozwiązanie tej nierównowagi, jest zadaniem na skalę światową. Celem tego wielkiego wyzwania jest umożliwienie globalnego, zrównoważonego rozwoju mobilności (transportu, przenoszenia) dóbr fizycznych, ich magazynowania, realizacji (produkcja, montaż, obróbka) oraz dystrybucji do finalnego klienta. Z ekonomicznego punktu widzenia celem jest pomnożenie zysków w obszarze globalnej logistyki, produkcji i transportu, dzięki wzrostowi efektywności realizacji procesów w nich zachodzących. Z perspektywy środowiska, głównym zadaniem jest obniżenie globalnego zużycia energii, bezpośredniego i pośredniego zanieczyszczenia powietrza CO2 oraz emisji gazów cieplarnianych. Dodatkowo napotykamy aspekt społeczny, taki, jak potrzeba wzrostu jakości życia osób zatrudnionych w obszarze logistyki, a także całej populacji, dzięki lepszemu dostępowi do infrastruktury i informacji związanych z przepływem towarów.

Transport and logistics are a global enterprise, which means transportation must be provided to and from every continent around the world. This article presents the main threats facing international air transport in the course of necessary flying over dangerous and unstable countries, which represent almost a half of world’s land surface.

Wstęp i cel: Logistyka XXI wieku jest wielkim wyzwaniem dla zapewnienia jakości procesów produkcyjnych nie tylko ze względu na rosnącą złożoność, ale przede wszystkim ze względu na konieczność znalezienia nowych innowacyjnych rozwiązań, które sprostają oczekiwaniom i współczesnym wymogom każdego klienta. Celem pracy zatem jest zaprezentowanie znaczenia i istoty zarządzania jakością oraz modelu instrumentów w doskonaleniu procesów produkcyjnych każdego współczesnego przedsiębiorstwa. Materiał i metody: Materiał bazuje na literaturze przedmiotu. Zastosowano metodę analizy i konstrukcji logicznej. Wyniki: W pracy przedstawiono znaczenie, istotę i zarządzanie jakością oraz model instrumentów doskonalenia jakości procesów produkcyjnych w warunkach logistyki globalnej. W części teoretycznej pracy podjęto rozważania na temat znaczenia i istoty jakości w procesach produkcyjnych, a także wyzwań jakie niesie logistyka globalna dla zapewnienia wysokiej jakości procesów produkcyjnych współczesnego przedsiębiorstwa. Przyjęto założenie wynikające z istoty systemu zarządzania jakością, iż wdrożenie i efektywne funkcjonowanie systemu zarządzania jakością i jego doskonalenie poprzez implementację właściwych (ujętych w opracowanym modelu) instrumentów doskonalenia procesów produkcyjnych realizowanych w długim okresie czasu przyczyni się do wzrostu pozycji konkurencyjnej poprzez wzrost jakości produktów przedsiębiorstwa na globalnym rynku. Wniosek: System zarządzania jakością i jego narzędzia doskonalenia w procesie produkcyjnym w warunkach logistyki globalnej to skuteczne narządzie nadzorowania jakości produktów w całym ciągu technologicznym procesu produkcyjnego, który pozwala na zmniejszenie braków wewnętrznych i reklamacji oraz wzrostu zamówień klientów.

Introduction and aim: Logistics the XXI century is a great challenge to ensure the quality of production processes, not only because of the increasing complexity, but mainly because of the necessity to find new, innovative solutions that will meet the expectations and requirements of each customer today. Therefore the aim of the work is to present the meaning and essence of quality management and model of instruments in the improvement of production processes of each modern company. Material and methods: The material is based on the literature. Method of analysis and logical construction has been used. Results: The study presented the importance and essence of the quality management and model of instruments to improve the quality of production processes in the terms of global logistics. In the theoretical part of the work considered about the importance and essence of quality in production processes, as well as the challenges of global logistics to ensure high-quality production processes of the modern enterprise. In the analytical and conceptual part was developed a model of instruments to improve the quality of production processes, pointing to the importance of implementing a quality management system in the highly competitive and global logistics. It was assumed resulting from the essence of a quality management system that the implementation and effective functioning of the quality management system and its improvement by the implementation of appropriate (included in the developed model) instruments to improve production processes carried out in a long period of time will contribute to growth the competitive position by increasing the quality of products the company at the global market. Conclusion: Quality Management Systems and its tools for the improvement in the production process in the conditions of global logistics is a effective tool for supervising the quality of products throughout technological line production process, which allows to reduce the internal shortcomings and complaints and growth the number of customer orders.

W pracy przedstawiono znaczenie, istotę i zarządzanie jakością oraz model instrumentów doskonalenia jakości procesów produkcyjnych w warunkach logistyki globalnej. W części teoretycznej pracy podjęto rozważania na temat znaczenia i istoty jakości w procesach produkcyjnych, a także wyzwań jakie niesie logistyka globalna dla zapewnienia wysokiej jakości procesów produkcyjnych współczesnego przedsiębiorstwa. This paper presents the importance of the nature and quality management and the model instruments to improve the quality of production processes in the conditions of global logistics. In the theoretical part of the article we present considerations on the meaning and essence of quality in production processes, as well as the challenges posed by global logistics to ensure high-quality production processes of the modern enterprise. The conceptual and analytical part of the paper has been developed the model consists of instruments to improve the quality of production processes, pointing to the importance of implementing a quality management system in the highly competitive and global logistics. Assumption is based on the essence of a quality management system that the implementation and effective functioning of the quality management system and its improvement through the implementation of appropriate (included in the developed model) instruments to improve production processes realized in the long term will contribute to improve the competitive position by increasing the quality of products the company on the global market. Thus, the aim of this work is to present the meaning and essence of quality management and the model instruments in the improvement of production processes of every modern company.
