The purpose of this review paper was to take up the subject of using numerical methods in calculations of highly heterogeneous media, such as soil. The article deals mainly with the issue of stochastic nature and variability of soil parameters and the ways of describing it with mathematical tools. The two main computational approaches, Random Finite Element Method (RFEM) and Stochastic Finite Element Method (SFEM), have been presented in a simplified manner. In addition, the existing methods for generating random fields have been listed and one of them – Local Average Subdivision (LAS) – has been briefly described.
