What makes a particular person, and not a different one, become a political leader? The most popular traditional theories of leadership include: trait theory and situational theories. In the era of turbulent changes in organisations and their surroundings the traditional concept of leadership is simply not enough. In order to satisfy the new requirements in the area under discussion the theory of transformational leadership was formulated, which stressed the importance of the mission, inspiration and the stimulation of learning processes. The psychological explorations in the domain of political leadership concentrate on studies into the personality and biography of the leader; the characteristics of entire groups and individual folIowers led by the leader; the nature of bonds which link the leader to his supporters or opponents; the context a wider social configuration; the results of interactions between the leader and the group. It appears that in the group of variables which are good predictors of leader behaviours one can also include directiveness, a sense of socio-political control and pragmatism.

Co sprawia, że liderem politycznym zostaje ta, a nie inna osoba? Do najpopularniejszych tradycyjnych teorii przywództwa należą: teoria cech i teorie sytuacyjne. W dobie burzliwych zmian organizacji i ich otoczenia tradycyjne ujęcie przywództwa nie jest wystarczające. Wyjściem naprzeciw nowym wymaganiom w omawianym obszarze była konstrukcja teorii przywództwa transformacyjnego, podkreślającej znaczenie misji, inspiracji i pobudzania procesów uczenia się. Psychologiczne eksploracje obszaru przywództwa politycznego koncentrują się na badaniach osobowości i biografii lidera; charakterystyki grup i pojedynczych sympatyków, którym lider przewodzi; natury więzi łączących przywódcę i jego zwolenników, bądź przeciwników; kontekstu - szerszego układu społecznego; efektów interakcji między przywódcą a grupą. Wydaje się, że do grupy zmiennych będących dobrymi predyktorami zachowań przywódczych można zaliczyć również dyrektywność, poczucie kontroli socjopolitycznej i pragmatyzm.
