Anomalous flashovers of silicone rubber insulators under the artificial rain test

The wet flashover voltage of medium voltage insulators made of a silicone rubber is 8% lower than the wet flashover voltage of a porcelain insulator with an identical profile. These surprising results, obtained in 2012, were confirmed again in 2019. The flashover development on the composite insulator is very short (less than 30 ms). On the other hand, on the porcelain insulator, the flashover develops longer (1–3 seconds). The Koppelmann equation was modified, and the Obenaus model to calculate the flashover voltage of insulators under the artificial rain was presented. Attention was paid to the importance of insulator diameters and the phenomenon of water cascades.

Opisano układ probierczy, aparaturę pomiarową i badania wykonane na stacji prób ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ostatnich 10 lat. W związku ze zmniejszeniem w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach emisji pyłu przez przemysł, na stacji podjęto pionierskie badania wytrzymałości elektrycznej izolatorów w warunkach lekkich zabrudzeń. Zaproponowano modyfikację obliczania parametru zanieczyszczenia atmosfery do wyznaczania stref zabrudzeniowych.

This paper describes the test circuit, measuring equipment and the investigations carried out especially during last 10 years at Glogow pollution test station. Taking into account the decrease of industrial dust emission in last decades, the pioneering research of insulators behavior under light contamination conditions was started. The modification of pollution index calculation for the selection of insulators in respect of polluted conditions was proposed.
