Estimating groundwater vulnerability to pollution is based on the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the degree of exposure to the pollution. This article attempts to assess groundwater vulnerability to pollution in the area of a complex of landfill sites located in the supply area of one of the important groundwater reservoirs in southern Poland. Two dynamic leaching tests and two static tests were carried out on two different samples of slag from one of the metallurgical landfills during various periods of storage (15 year old waste and freshly deposited waste). Transport equations were based on the data from a column experiment. The advection-dispersion equation for column leaching was employed, which confirmed the simulation parameters through experimentation. The results of the leaching tests on chlorides showed that they are leached from the landfill over a period of ~60–90 years from the moment of depositing the waste. The seepage time for the Quaternary aquifer is 1–7 years and, for the Triassic aquifer, 5–40 years. The Backman’s contamination index (1998) values exceeded 25, while a high threat to groundwater is observed when the contamination index value equals 3. The use of all the aforementioned methods determined the most vulnerable area.

Various bioleaching processes are applied to recover valuable elements from low-grade ores and metallurgical waste. The activity of microorganisms leads to solubilization of metals from solid substrates and, in this way, makes possible recovery of elements from solutions. The study of wastes from the nickel-chromium steelworks in Szklary showed that a mobile fraction of elements remaining in residues from bioleaching process was substantially larger than in raw waste material. The highest mobility was displayed by metals in wastes leached by heterotrophic bacteria prior to autotrophic ones. In that case the mobile fraction makes up 60–80% of the total concentration of Ni, Cr, Cu and Zn. Storage of bioleached mine tailings increases risk of permeation of hazardous matter to aquifers. When this is the case, a careful flushing and use of metal-binding materials such as bentonite, zeolites, cement, and commercial preparations containing these ingredients are recommended. The obtained results showed that concrete, which is the cheapest of the applied materials, bound almost entirely the mobile fractions of Ni, Cr, Co, Pb, Cu and Zn.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki dynamicznych badań wymywalności odpadów przemysłu hutnictwa żelaza. Badaniom poddano dwie próby żużli, pobrane ze składowiska odpadów Huty Katowice Lipówka. Pierwszą próbę stanowiły odpady zdeponowane w 1989 roku. Druga próba została pobrana z odpadów nowodeponowanych. W pracy określono rodzaje i ilości wymywanych substancji. Uzyskane wyniki zinterpretowano przy pomocy programu CXTFIT i odniesiono do bryły składowiska.

In this paper are described the results of leaching tests of metallurgical waste. It was sampled from the Lipówka Landfill, where the waste, mainly slags, from the Katowice Steelwork are deposited. The research was carried out both on the waste deposited at present and on the waste deposited in 1989. The type and quantity of the leached contaminations were described. The results of leaching tests were interpreted by using CXTFIT program and related to the Lipówka landfill.

The study on the alkaline sludge from the ,,Górka" settling pond utilization as a component of the quasi-concrete composite was presented in this paper. Solidification with the mineral binding material was chosen as the method. The purpose of this work was to obtain a composite, whose properties would comply with the standards. Therefore, the crushing strength and harmful substances leaching tests were carried out. Having considered their results it can be stated that 15% addition of the binding material (in relation to the dry waste mass) guarantees the material solidification and ensures suitable mechanical and chemical properties of the composite. The obtained composites can be applied to waste dump reclamation or to the quasi-concrete elements production.
