Concept of a landscape map according to Professor Franciszek Uhorczak

In the article, the concept of landscape maps by Franciszek Uhorczak (1902-1981), Professor of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, was discussed. The maps constitute a cartographic illustration of volume III, IV and V of “Universal Geography” edited by Państwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe (the National Scientific Publishing House) (Warsaw 1965-1967) - the first Polish small-scale landscape maps of the world. From the perspective of the 50s, an attempt was undertaken to assess the editorial assumptions, landscape typology and selection of cartographic means used by the author, paying special attention to the selection of colours representing landscapes. Also, issues raising controversies related to the degree of generalization of particular elements of the content, typology of landscapes as well as map details were indicated. The performed analysis leads to the conclusion that landscape maps by Professor F. Uhorczak constituted one of the most significant achievements of Polish thematic cartography of the 20th century, and they are an unequaled model also for the contemporary cartographers.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi kontynuację tematyki podjętej w pierwszym artykule w tym tomie. Celem artykułu jest poddanie pod dyskusję jednego z wielu możliwych przykładów rozwiązań metodycznych powstania map krajobrazów kulturowych. Propozycja ta opiera się na założeniu, że istnieje deterministyczny związek pomiędzy elementami środowiska przyrodniczego a typami funkcjonalnymi krajobrazu, i dlatego są one, do pewnego stopnia, reprezentacją (odbiciem) etapów ewolucyjnych. Za wiodące kryterium wydzieleń krajobrazu przyjęto zróżnicowanie funkcjonalne krajobrazów kulturowych Polski i wynikające z niego specyficzne zagospodarowanie (zróżnicowanie strukturalne). Pod pojęciem funkcji krajobrazu rozumiany jest tu zespół warunków (w tym specyficzną organizację przestrzenną i zainwestowanie) jakie cechuje dany podtyp krajobrazu kulturowego dla wypełniania określonej działalności człowieka lub spełniania jego potrzeb. Przedstawiono kilka map analitycznych1 (mapy użytkowania terenu, mapy osadnictwa, zespołów religijnych i turystycznych) oraz propozycję mapy syntetycznej krajobrazów kulturowych Polski.

The article continues the subject matter taken up in the first article of this volume. The aim of this paper is to submit for discussion one of several possible examples of methodological solutions for developing maps of cultural landscapes. The suggestion is based on the assumption that there is a deterministic relation between elements of the natural environment and functional types of the landscape and thus, they are, to some extent, a representation (reflection) of evolutional stages. What was considered the major criterion for distinguishing landscapes was functional variety of cultural landscapes of Poland and subsequent specific management (structural diversity). The notion of landscape function refers to the whole of conditions (including particular spatial arrangement and investment) typical of a given subtype of cultural landscape for serving a particular human activity or meeting man’s needs. The paper presents several analytical maps (map of land use, settlement, religious and tourist objects) and a suggestion for a synthetic map of cultural landscapes of Poland.
