The study of changes in grassland was conducted on the territory of individual counties of the West Pomeranian Voivodship. Based on data collected in the Valorisation of the Agricultural Production Space of Poland and spatial data (an electronic 1:5000 soil and agricultural map) the basic information on the use of agricultural land in the 70s of the 20th century. Changes in use over time were analysed based on data the Statistics Poland (Pol.: Główny Urząd Statystyczny - GUS), General Geographic Database and The Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture Crop Register (Pol.: Agencja Restrukturyzacji i Modernizacji Rolnictwa - ARiMR). The studies showed that in the West Pomeranian Voivodship, a successive decrease in the share of permanent grasslands (0.9%) and arable lands (1.4%) is observed. There is a spatial variation in the share of permanent grassland in the province’s counties, with a distinction between northern and southern counties. The main direction of change in grassland area is arable land, which applies to counties with the highest share of permanent grassland (PG) and counties with a high share of the best soils and forest direction. Land quality was the main factor determining the direction of grassland changes, with the best PG converted to arable land or for investment purposes. In contrast, the weakest were converted to forestry or spontaneously wooded through abandonment. The main reasons for changes in grassland areas in the West Pomeranian Voivodship were: conversion of use to arable land, afforestation of grasslands, land use for urban planning purposes, leaving land fallow and conversion for constructing fishponds.

The study of the physical and chemical parameters of groundwater is one of many elements enabling complete recognition of engineering geology conditions that are used in the designing process of building construction. The degree of groundwater aggressiveness is determined, based on the groundwater components likely to cause foundation corrosion (pH, SO42-2+, NH4+, aggressive CO2) and carried out in accordance with the Polish standard PN-EN 206+A2:2021-08. A series of spatial and statistical analyses of archival data from 40 selected engineering geology documentations from the years 2010-2013 were performed to investigate the potential variability in the degree of aggressiveness of shallow groundwater in Wrocław city. Groundwater from 50 individual research points was analysed. Groundwater components: of pH and contents of aggressive carbon dioxide and sulfate ions have a significant influence on the degree of groundwater aggressiveness. Magnesium and ammonium ions are statistically unimportant. Groundwater aggressiveness environments are spatially variable and are demonstrated not only in the study area, but also within a single investment. More than one analysis is necessary to be performed to evaluate groundwater aggressiveness. This conclusion is also confirmed by the current study conducted in 2021.

Changing atmospheric conditions, including above all the deepening extreme weather phenomena, are increasing from year to year. This, in consequence, causes an increase in the incidence of low outflows. The study compares low water levels for two catchments: Biała Woda and Czarna Woda, and phosphorus and nitrogen load using the Nutrient Delivery Ratio (NDR) model in InVEST software. The objective of the NDR is to map nutrient sources from catchment area and transfer to the river bed. The nutrient loads (nitrogen and phosphorus) spread across the landscape are determined based on a land use (LULC) map and associated loading rates described in literature. The studies have shown that low water levels have been more common recently and pose the greatest threat to the biological life in the aquatic ecosystems. The structure of land use is also of great importance, with a significant impact on the runoff and nitrogen and phosphorus load. Phosphorus and runoff from surface sources to the water of Biała Woda and Czarna Woda catchments area has been reduced in forested areas. Only higher run-offs are observed in the residential buildings zone. The nitrogen load was also greater in the lower (estuary) parts of both catchments, where residential buildings dominate.

To investigate and assess the effects of land use and its changes on concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Fe) in the tributary of drinking water reservoir catchment, soils of different land use types (forest, arable land, meadows and pastures, residential areas), suspended sediment and bottom sediment were collected. Heavy metals were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The metal distribution pattern was observed, where Zn and Cd could be considered as main metal contaminants. The variation in the concentration level of Zn and Cd in studied soils showed the impact of pollution from anthropogenic activities. Also some seasonal variations were visible among the suspended sediment and bottom sediment samples which could be associated with land agricultural practices or meteorological conditions. The sediment fingerprints approach used for determining sources of the suspension in the catchment showed (Kruskal-Wallis H test, p˂0.05), that only Mn and Ni were not able to be distinguished among the potential sediment sources. A multiple linear regression model described the relationship between suspended sediment and 4 types of soil samples. The results related suspended composition mostly to the samples from the residential land use. Considering the contemporary trend of observed changes in land use resulting in conversion of agricultural areas into residential and service structures these changes can be essential for the contamination of aquatic environment. This situation is a warning sign due to the rapid industrialization, urbanization and intensive agriculture in this region what can significantly affect the drinking water quality.

Celem pracy była ocena wpływu użytkowania gruntów i ich zmian na stężenia metali ciężkich (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Fe) w dopływie zlewni zbiornika wody pitnej. Do badań pobrano próbki gleb z różnych typów użytkowania gruntów (las, grunty orne, łąki i pastwiska, tereny zabudowane), rumowiska unoszonego oraz osadów dennych.

The aim of the study was the prediction of N-P-K inputs (hereafter referred to as NPK load) from agricultural sources. The study aimed to determine relations between the structural changes and the N-P-K load (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) fertilizer components in the upper Dunajec River basin (the Carpathian region in Poland). Analysis included the level and nature of agricultural production, the land use structure and non-agricultural factors. Multiple regression analysis was used for the development of the model. Relationships were determined in the form of regression models in the system of N-P-K load-structural parameters-land use-surface water quality. The quality of surface water was assessed in a range of concentrations of N-NO3-, N-NH4+, PO43-, Cl-, and compared to the N-P-K load that was brought to the basin from agricultural sources. Significant structural and spatial changes took place in the upper Dunajec River basin that affected many social, economic and environmental factors. Agricultural production was reduced, resulting in a decrease of area of agricultural land between the year 1980 and 2010. The most important factors influencing the changes in biogenic load of an agricultural origin were: stocking density and mineral fertilization. Both of these parameters determined the amount of N-P-K load in approx. 80-90% (not counting the use of N-P-K components by crops). Surface water quality has generally improved, only higher concentrations of chlorides were recorded in small urbanized river basins. Therefore, the chemical composition of water plays the role of a simplified indicator of structural changes. Mathematical formulas proved changes in N-P-K load depending on variations of individual influencing factors. The development of the usable space of the investigated river basin must take into account agricultural and non-agricultural factors, as well as the proportions and relationships between them. Only then might the sustainable and multifunctional development of these areas be provided.

The study discusses the changes in the spatial structure of the municipality of Brodnica based on the analysis of a 1911 topographic map and aerial photographs taken in 2013. The 102 years covered by the analysis brought various events that changed the face of the town, its functions and structure as well as its surface. The analysed area covering 23.14 km2 formed a part of Brodnica within the town’s 2013 boundaries. Brodnica is a typical county seat town located in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship, with a population of 28 605 (2014). In the analysed period, the changes in the functional structure covered an area of 1,547.17 ha, that is 66.9% of the municipality. A total of 65 change were identified, in addition to 2 zones where the changes were most pronounced. One zone is located in the north and the other in the south, and they are separated by a relatively wide floor of the Drwęca River valley. The changes were mainly observed in agricultural areas, which were mostly transformed and reduced their surface area.

XIII w.

The paper presents the fragmentation processes of forest patches in the area of the historical New March province, closely associated with the medieval colonization period from the second half of the thirteenth century. Within the large and dense forests of the research area, the small, deforested rural enclaves areas (140-800 ha) are nowadays regularly distributed. Its specific arrangement was characterized basing on contemporary and archival cartographic materials. It was found that, despite the trend observed over the years (the area of forests being taken over by agriculture land use), the deforested areas surrounding villages were not subject to major changes. In the analysis based on cartographic materials from 18-20th c., the boundaries of clearings have not significantly changed. The specific fragmentation type associated with the medieval rural settlement system, which took place almost eight hundred years ago, is still readable and affects the structure of the landscape, acting as a centuries-old witness of transformation of the cultural landscape.

Zmiany użytkowania terenu w dolinach potoków Jaszcze i Jamne nasiliły się w okresie transformacji gospodarczej kraju po 1989 r., przynosząc zmiany źródła utrzymania mieszkańców i rozwój turystyki rekreacyjno-wypoczynkowej. Konsekwencją przemian jest wzrost powierzchni leśnej (w Jaszcze o 11,5%, a w Jamne o 18,5%) kosztem zmniejszenia udziału gruntów rolnych i użytków zielonych. Pomimo znacznego ograniczenia rolniczego użytkowania ziemi w zlewniach potoków Jaszcze i Jamne drogi polne stanowią nadal ważny element środowiska przyrodniczego. Gęstość dróg użytkowanych uległa zmniejszeniu z 6,97 km km-2 w 1981 r. do 4,3 km km-2 w 2008r.

Socio-economic transformations taking place in the Jaszcze and Jamne catchments are typical for the Beskides in the western Polish Carpathians. These changes have increased after the year 1989, during the period of economic transformation in our country. They manifest themselves in the increase of the total forest area (Jaszcze catchment for 11.5% and Jamne for 18.5%), parallel to the decrease in the participation of arable lands and grass lands. Unfavourable relief, especially the large inclination of slopes and skeletalness of soils favour the decrease of the arable lands area. It was found that the increase of the forest area was proportional to the rise of altitude, which was the result of the shepherding withdrawing from the glades in the Beskides. The dominating source of maintenance for the inhabitants during the recent years has been becoming the activity outside agriculture. In spite of the considerable decrease of agricultural lands in the Jaszcze and Jamne catchments, the cart-roads are still an important and durable elements of the natural environment. These roads transformed mostly by the linear erosion, modify pattern of the natural outflow of water from the slopes and supplement the natural hydrographical network. The density of cart roads has decreased from 6.97 km km-2 in 1981 to 4.3 km km-2 in 2008, but the road density is still higher than the natural outflow network. Most abandoned cart roads appear on the slopes with the inclination of more than 15°. They constitute 95% of all unused cart-roads in the Jaszcze catchment and 80% in the Jamne.

In semiarid regions with low rainfall, poorly developed soils and marly lithologies, land abandonment leads to an increase in soil erosion and degradation processes. In some cases, the initiation of piping processes and the emergence of gullies takes place not long after its abandonment.

Mapping of land use for the needs of reconstruction of the country was one of the main tasks of the Head Off ce of the Land Surveying set up after the Second World War. Up to present day such map has not been made despite of many attempts and the high demand for this type of map primarily by the spatial economy. The main reason was the lack of raw materials and high cost of feld works. The situation changed with the launch of Landsat satellite. Images taken by this satellite were used for the preparation of land use map covering the entire country. They were also used to compilation the land cover databases developed within the three CORINE Land Cover (CLC) projects in 1990, 2000 and 2006. Comparison of these databases allowed an analysis of land use changes occurred within 16 years. These changes were relatively small, far below expectations. CLC database was also compared with a map of land use developed on the basis of topographic maps from the 1930's. The comparison showed changes that have occurred on the surface representing almost 10% of the total area of the country. They reveal both some effects of hostilities, the current expansion of the country, as well as the effects of natural disasters which hit Poland in recent years. Images taken by Landsat have also been applied to study the damage of forests in the Sudety Mountains. Several degrees of damage to spruce stands have been distinguished on the basis of satellite images. They were also used to study the development of brown coal mine and its impact on dropping the groundwater level in the vicinity of mine as well as to determine the development of Warsaw built-up areas in the last 80 years.

Zostały one także wykorzystane do opracowania baz danych zawierających informacje o pokryciu terenu w ramach trzech projektów CORINE Land Cover (CLC) 1990, 2000 i 2006. Porównanie tych baz pozwoliło na analizę zmian użytkowania ziemi jakie zaszły w okresie 16 lat. Zmiany te okazały się stosunkowo nieduże, dalekie poniżej oczekiwań. Baza danych CLC-2000 została porównana z mapą użytkowania ziemi opracowaną na podstawie map topograficznych z lat 30 ubiegłego wieku. Porównanie to wykazało zmiany jakie zaszły w ciągu niemal 80 lat w Polsce.

In the presented work author analyzed land use changes in Poland in the period 1815–2008, trying to find historical justification of land transformations and to answer to what extent current land use structure was formed by past processes. Periods of land use structure formation in Poland within last two centuries were related to “classic” historical divisions. Four basic stages were distinguished: first stage covered partition of Poland 1815- 1914, second – interwar period 1918–1939, third–period 1945–1989 and fourth recent times from 1989.

Two databases were elaborated by the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography as results of CORINE Land Cover 90 and CORINE Land Cover 2000 projects. They contain data about land cover in Poland in 1990 and 2000. The comparison of these two databases revealed insignificant differences in land cover in the last decade of 20th century. Taking into account development of Polish economy, bigger changes in land use/land cover could be expected. To determine whether land use in Poland is stable or changeable, but over much longer period of time, the CORINE Land Cover 2000 database was compared with the General Map of Land Use in Poland at the scale 1:1 000 000 elaborated by F. Uhorczak. Topographic maps at the scale 1:100 000 elaborated before the World War II were the source materiale for compiling the General Map of Land Use in Poland at the scale 1:1000000. This map was converted to digital form to compare its content with the CORINE Land Cover 2000 database generalized to 8 land use/cover forms. There is a time lag of about seventy years between elaboration of topographic maps and the CORINE Land Cover 2000 database and for that reason bigger land use/ cover change could be observed. Comparison of the General Map of Land Use in Poland at the scale 1:1000000 with generalised CORINE Land Cover 2000 database revealed considerable changes in land use/land cover over the period of seventy years. They comprised above 9% of the total area of the country. The greatest changes occurred in arable areas, meadows and pastures. These land use/cover forms were converted into forests, settlements and industrial areas.
