The spatial organisation of time-averaged streamwise velocity and its correlation with the surface topography of water-worked gravel beds

An examination was made into the spatial pattern of time-averaged streamwise velocity in the near-bed region over two water-worked gravel beds. Laboratory observations revealed that there is considerable spatial variability in velocity. It was organised into streamwise streaks of high-speed fluid which were overlain by spots of low-speed fluid. This spatial pattern was found to be consistently and heavily dependent on relative submergence. The spatial pattern of velocity was shown to have little linear coherence with bed surface topography at the grain-scale. It suggested that for flows above the two beds studied here, bed surface topography at the grain-scale exerted less of an influence on the spatial organisation of time-averaged streamwise velocities than relative submergence.

W laboratoryjnych, modelowych badaniach na otwartym kanale przepływowym (model basenu ze skłonem) odtworzono sedymentację redeponowanych skał mułowo-solnych, w środowisku deltowym w facjach kanałowej i lobowej. Materiał transportowany był trakcyjnie w kanałach i powierzchniowo nad lobami. Osad kanałów miał tylko niewiele grubsze ziarno niż osad lobów. Obserwowano daleką wędrówkę grubych klastów łupków ilastych i halitu, co było spowodowane większą wypornością solanki w stosunku do wody słodkiej i niską gęstością halitu.

In laboratory, model examinations at the opened flow channel (model basin with the slope) reconstructed sedimentary of redeposited salty-mud rocks, in the delta environment with the channel and lobe facies. Material was transported traction in channels and suspension above the lobs. The deposit of channels infill had only a little coarser grains than the deposit of lobs. A distant transport of the coarse halite and claystone clasts was observed. It was resulted from higher buoyancy of brine then fresh water and relatively low density of halite.
