This paper considers the mutual relationship and cooperation between engineering theory and practice in the development of the professional performance of engineers. In this paper, theory is understood as the ability of creative thinking - the spiritus movens (moving spirit) of any reasonable human activity, and that of the engineer's in particular. Therefore, high standards of general education preceding the university schooling, and at the university itself, should be of much concern for the engineering students, educators, and practitioners - in order to develop intellectually mature humans-engineers. The nontechnical demands placed upon the engineer require more than pure technical capabilities. The author wishes to present the development and the state-of-the-art of his own judgment in that matter.

In the article, some problems which are facing now university-level education in engineering, and in particular, in control and robotics, are discussed. General framework for the discussion ranges from the educational system adaptation issues which are raised by the recent social and political changes in Poland, through the necessity of achieving the European standards in engineering education, to the difficult problems of balancing the interdisciplinary curriculum an a way to efficiently educate new engineers able to solve the contemporary problems of the field. Standarisation and quality monitoring issues are pointed out. Some important opinions of leading industrials and professors from top European universities have been provided in order to strengthen authors point of view.

W pracy przedyskutowano niektóre problemy napotykane w kształceniu w uczelniach technicznych, a w szczególności w dziedzinie automatyki i robotyki. Dyskusja obejmuje zagadnienia począwszy od dostosowania systemu kształcenia spowodowanego ostatnimi przemianami społeczno-politycznymi w Polsce, przez konieczność osiągnięcia standardów europejskich w kształceniu technicznym, aż do trudnych problemów wyważenia interdyscyplinarnego programu w taki sposób, by efektywnie kształcić nowych inżynierów zdolnych do rozwiązywania współczesnych problemów w rozważanej dziedzinie. Wskazano zagadnienia standaryzacji i monitoringu jakości. Aby wzmocnić punkt widzenia autorów przytoczono niektóre ważne opinie czołowych przedstawicieli przemysłu oraz profesorów renomowanych uniwersytetów europejskich.
