The paper presents a comprehensive review of three practical methods used for selection of optimal aggregate gradation curves for rigid pavement concretes in the USA. These methods include the Shilstone’s Coarseness Factor (CF) chart, the 18-8 gradation band and the 0.45 power plot. Of the three methods presented, the CF chart is most widely used in practice as it allows for quick selection of well-graded aggregate that reduces the amount of paste in the mix, improves workability and increases durability. However, it is recommended that all three of the presented methods be tried at the mixture design stage in order to offset potential shortcomings of any of the individual approaches and minimize potential workability and performance problems.
