Calculation of the economic efficiency of an investment considering the estimated cost of losses connected with unreliability of modern pumping stations should be used as the criterion for finding the optimal solution in their design. The cost connected with the use of pumping stations depends on random limitations in water supply. In view of the probabilistic character of losses (failures of pump units of fittings, cuts off in electric energy supplies) the estimation of the cost of unreliability at the stage of pumping station design is not easy. The paper presents the method which aims to estimate the predicted annual cost of the potable water pumping station unreliability as the function of station readiness (assumed as a criterion of reliability) and the economic equivalent of unsupplied water (the expected cost oflosses per unit of unsupplied water volume). This method enables us to consider, while calculating the efficiency of an investment, reliability parameters which often condition the choice of the optimal design. The proposed method may be used in designing municipal and industrial pumping stations. First of all, however, it can be applied to the estimation of costs of unreliability of pumping station which supply water to industrial enterprises of major economic impact.
