Einstein's struggle with the correct formulation of the field equations of his general theory of relativity is briefly described. These equations contain a huge amount of information about the universe, its structure and evolution (of which Einstein himself was not aware). This fact poses questions on the nature of mathematics, on the nature of the universe, and on the nature of our mind which creates (discovers?) mathematics and employs it to investigate the universe.
