Random copolyesters of ethylene terephalate (ET) and L-lactic (LA) having [eta]red=72-82 cm3/g (by the method for PET) were studied. They contained short sequences of ETx(x=2.8-3.3) and 25.5-29.5 mol% of LA mainly in form of individual units (LAy component with y<1.25) and showed Tg=58-64C (after synthesis) and penetrometrically measured melting temperature, Tmp=120-185C (after annealing). The melt-spun 56dtex/16f multifilament yarn having tenacity c..20 cN/tex and elongation 23% was obtained using the copolyester with properties [eta]red=81 cm3/g , Tg=63C and Tmp -185C. Hydrolytic degradation (55C, pH 7.35) as well as biodegradation tests in aqueous medium (35 and 55C) and in compost (55C) were performed using samples in form of pressed sheets and fibres. Distinet degradation of copolymers was observed only at temperature 55C (close to Tgvalues). It was found that hydrolytic degradability of copolyesters, which was mainly responsible for their behaviour during tests of biodegradation, was highly dependent on parameters of their chemical structure (X and y values).
