Konwencje są dla sztuki spoiwem i nośnikiem piękna, tak jak niosący prawdę język nauki spaja gmach aksjomatów i twierdzeń. Konwencje estetyczne są zbudowane na doświadczeniu, weryfikowanym i przekazywanym przez pokolenia. Niosą ładunek prawdy powszechnie odczuwanej, podobnie jak logika. Można postawić tezę, że etos architekta polega na zgłębianiu znajomości architektonicznych konwencji. Są one bowiem wspólnym językiem twórcy i odbiorcy. Prawo Lippsa-Meyera mówi, że wyłącznie nowy element formy czytelnej jest wyzwala-czem estetycznego afektu. Każdy nowy bodziec wizualny był w prehistorii podświadomie oceniany pod kątem przeżycia organizmu. A dziś element nowości wyzwala sekwencję przeżycia estetycznego.

Conventions for the art are links with beauty and the beauty media in the same way as the truth bearing language of science links axioms with theorems. Aesthetic conventions accumulate over the experience gained, verified and passed down from one generation to another. They are charged with the truth that is commonly felt and understood similarly to logic, though more vaguely. Architecture is not set in a clear cut convention, it is the mumble of scientific, unverifiable theses. The existence of new and unpredictable elements is the source of aesthetic feelings. These elements, must, however, be set in some 'familiar' and expected complete form. Ethology states that everyone has his inborn matrix of beauty, that is only to a small extent modified by individual experience. Any architectural conventions fall within the matrix. A thesis may be stated that an architect's ethos consists in studying the architectural conventions as they are the language the creator and the recipient share. Without sharing one language we are just dust in the wind.
