Contextuality is a condition for preserving the uniqueness of a historical city

The definition of contextuality is given. The material and non-material components of the urban context are highlighted. The factors of influence on its formation and development have been determined. It was found that the formed certain architectural and urban planning context, which determines the unrepeatability of the city, is the result of the total impact on the internal features and properties of existing buildings and open urban space the external natural, historical-cultural, historical-political, national, religious and socio-economic, and also information technology and legal factors throughout the entire period of the city’s existence. The parameters are highlighted as defining characteristics of the “place”, according to which it is proposed to evaluate the “sustainability” of the historically established architectural and urban planning context. It is assessed as the preservation and harmonious development of these defining characteristics in eddition with modern new elements and connections. It is important for possible restoration-reconstructive transformations in order to preserve context’s uniqueness, ensure sustainable continuity and increase attractiveness through the activation of existing historical accumulations and their addition with modern new ones.

Definiowany jako „tworzenie miejsc”, placemaking opiera się nie tylko na stosowaniu wyszukanego języka architektonicznego, ale również na harmonijnym połączeniu architektury z jej miejscem położenia. W twórczości Louisa I. Kahna, rola jaką w jego projektach odgrywa teren i otoczenie nie ogranicza się jedynie do wpływu na formę pojedynczych budowli, ale przyczynia się jednocześnie do rozwoju jego indywidualnej metody pracy. Rożne miejsca, lokalizacje, w których Kahn osadza swoje kolejne budowle stanowią źródło uniwersalnych refleksji związanych z wykonywaniem zawodu architekta. W ich efekcie Louis I. Kahn wypracował na przestrzeni swojej kariery szereg zasad projektowych, które nazwać możemy jego „narzędziami placemaking’u” i które nierozerwalnie składają się na jego metodę projektową.

Défini comme «la fabrication des lieux», le placemaking repose non pas seulement sur un vocabulaire architectural recherché, mais aussi sur une union harmonieuse de l’architecture et du site. Pour Louis I. Kahn, le rôle que le territoire joue dans ses projets contribue aussi au développement de sa méthode. Les différents endroits dans lesquels il construit lui offrent une source des réflexions générales. Tout au long de sa carrière, Kahn élabore une série de principes que nous pouvons définir comme ses «outils» du placemaking et qui sont inhérents à sa méthode.

Tu i ówdzie w Krakowie, stanowi wybór szeregu anegdotycznie ujętych sporów, które toczą się zarówno w środowisku architektów, jak i wśród mieszkańców miasta na temat istotnych kontrowersyjnych dzieł. Przytoczono kilka istotnych wypowiedzi dotyczących tych miejsc i kontrastów współczesnej i historycznej architektury. Konkluzją całości wydaje się stwierdzenie, że istnieje w Krakowie możliwość łączenia nurtu architektury tradycyjnej i nowoczesnej w harmonijną postać kompozycji ulic i placów. Dla nas krakowiaków aspekt czysto formalny łączy się jeszcze z mocnym nurtem emocjonalnym, przeżywania wszystkiego, co nazywamy krajobrazem miasta.

Here and elsewhere in Cracow, is the choice of a number of anecdotically included disputes, which are now held in both the architects and among the inhabitants of the city on the essential controversial works. Some examples refer to some of the most important expression for these positions and contrasts of contemporary and historical architecture. A whole seems to conclude that there is the possibility of mergers in Krakow stream of traditional and modern architecture in a harmonious composition of streets and squares. For us, krakovians purely formal aspect still connects with a strong emotional trend, experience everything that we call the city landscape.
