The article features competence classification and defines required leadership qualities in order to learn what knowledge and abilities officers serving in multinational operations outside the country need. It is believed that the most essential is the competence of commanding which includes competence divided into basic (personal and a system of value), social (interpersonal, leadership), professional (technical, specialist, fulfilling leadership functions) and conceptual. A special attention is drawn to the fact that due to the armed forces’ changing tasks, the set of officer’s required competences, participants of oversees operations, may also undergo constant changes.
