Development of knowledge and skills of engineers and managers in the era of Industry 5.0 in the light of expert research

Purpose: The article aims to identify areas of knowledge, key skills, and competencies of engineers and managers necessary in the Industry 5.0 environment. Design/methodology/approach: The achievements and results presented in the article were obtained based on literature research and expert research conducted among 25 professionals with experience in management, innovation, and technology of Industry 4.0. The research technique was a standardized interview. Findings: Based on the research results obtained, the essential knowledge areas and competencies of engineers and managers of industrial enterprises oriented to the implementation of the Industry 5.0 concept were identified. Research limitations/implications: The analysis of experts' opinions is only a signaling of the problem of the need for changes in the development of knowledge and competencies of industry employees functioning in the Industry 5.0 environment. The research should be extended to other areas of the economy, e.g., services, education, quality of life, and Society 5.0. Originality/value: Original achievements obtained during the research include getting valuable research results in the areas of knowledge, required key skills, and competencies required of future industry employees. The research results were obtained directly from experts who, through their daily experience, meet the knowledge and competence deficits of modern companies. In addition, experts have the necessary knowledge of new technologies and requirements posed by the Industry 5.0 environment.

Technological development is changing the skills model for employees in industry 4.0. Technical and IT competencies remain crucial for an engineer, however employers are increasingly appreciating soft skills, especially those that facilitate teamwork and communication or co-creation of innovations with customers and external stakeholders. The article presents good practices for developing soft skills in engineers in industry 4.0 within the project "Curriculum Development of Master's Degree Program in Industrial Engineering for Thailand Sustainable Smart Industry - MSIE4”.

Każde celowe działanie ludzkie powinno bazować na rozległych i aktualizowanych zasobach wiedzy. Tylko wtedy ma szansę być skuteczne i przynieść oczekiwane rezultaty. Jest to szczególnie ważne, gdy działanie to zapewnia człowiekowi nie tylko przetrwanie w sensie biologicznym, ale realizację podstawowych jego potrzeb, z potrzebą bezpieczeństwa na czele. Wiedza zatem stanowi fundament życia ludzkiego i jest niezbywalnym warunkiem rozwoju cywilizacyjnego. Edukacja, a zwłaszcza edukacja przyszłych inżynierów, nie może ograniczać się do rozwijania umiejętności praktycznych, nawet jeśli bazują one na doświadczeniach pokoleń. Musi oprócz tego dostarczać zasobów wiedzy i kształtować postawy poszerzania jej zakresu. Przyjmuje się, że inżynier przede wszystkim powinien umieć działać w konkretnych sytuacjach oraz znajdować rozwiązania realnych problemów. Jednakże postęp techniczny i cywilizacyjny stawia przed tą grupa zawodową wciąż nowe wyzwania, które wymagają nowych rodzajów kompetencji, działania w obszarach interdyscyplinarnych, a w końcu dokonywania odkryć poszerzających wiedzę. A zatem niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie relacji interdyscyplinarnych w procesie edukacji inżynierów.

Every intentional human action should be based on extensive and current knowledge. Only then does it have a chance to be effective and to bring about the expected results. It is particularly important when the action undertaken ensures not only biological survival, but also fulfils basic human needs, with the need for safety at the forefront. Education, especially education of future engineers, cannot be reduced to only developing practical skills, even if they are based on the experience of former generations. In addition, education must provide knowledge and form attitudes for widening its scope. It is assumed that an engineer should above all know how to act in determined situations and find solutions for real problems. However, the progress of technology and civilization confronts this group with new challenges that appear constantly and that require new kinds of competences, actions in interdisciplinary areas and discoveries that will expand the knowledge base. Education in the sphere of safety includes content that is directly related with the ergonomic approach. Therefore it has features of a system, it is interdisciplinary and focused on the education process of engineers.

W artykule zaprezentowano i omówiono wyniki trzech badań ankietowych dotyczących pożądanego profilu kompetencyjnego współczesnego inżynieria. Badania prezentują opinie studentów technicznych, inżynierów-praktyków oraz pracodawców. Celem artykułu było poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na ile spójne są opinie o "Idealnym inżynierze" z tych trzech różnych punktów widzenia. Porównano wyniki badań i sformułowano wnioski końcowe.

Results of opinion poll referring to desirable competence profile of a contemporary engineer are presented and discussed. This research presents opinions of technical studies students, practicing engineers and employers. The aim of the paper was to quest for an answer how far coherent are the opinions about "Ideal engineer" from these three different points of view. The results of research have been compared and the final conclusions formulated.
