Influence of using various brake blocks materials on wheel rim stres

This paper deals with description of operation behaviour of various friction materials of brake blocks (cast iron and composite) of railway brakes with regard to braked wheels. Rim of the wheel is exposed to thermal loading during the braking process. The thermal loading depends on material of used brake blocks. The mechanical and thermal loading of the wheels results in various stress in its rim and disc. Consequence of this is deformation of wheel shape. Using of various brake materials exert influence mentioned phenomena and on the wear and possible damage of the wheel rim as well. It is caused by various properties of various brake blocks materials (heat conductivity and frictional properties). The paper is devoted to comparison of influence of using various brake blocks materials on operational properties of railway wheels and its mechanical and thermal loading and shape deformations.

W artykule omówiono ogólne przepisy i metodologię postępowania przy pracach dotyczących uzyskania certyfikatu przez producentów na elementy, które mają być użytkowane na kolejach polskich. Przedstawiono podstawowe wymagania jakie muszą być spełnione przy opracowaniu dokumentu normatywnego, badaniach na koła monoblokowe,opinii niezbędnych dla wydania certyfikatu przez Głównego Inspektora Kolejnictwa. W artykule zamieszczono również kompleksowe badania fizykomechaniczne i metaloznawcze oraz pomiary geometryczne kół monoblokowych.

The paper presents the general rules and procedures concerned with the activities necessary in order to obtain the certificates for parts and elements, which are to be used by Polish railways. The certificates are to be issued to the parts' manufacturers. The basic requirements for formulating the standards have been set out, together with the rules for investigations of monoblock wheels as well as the opinions necessary to the Chief Railway Inspector, who issues the certificates. The complex physic-mechanical and metal science tests and geometrical measurements of monoblock wheels have also been included in the paper.

W artykule przedstawiono proces i przyczyny zmęczeniowego pękania kół monoblokowych. Jako główną przyczynę pękania uznaje się udary cieplne podczas intensywnego hamowania powodujące powstawanie w wieńcu koła rozciągających naprężeń własnych oraz nadpęknięć. Przy użyciu zasad mechaniki pękania można sporządzić dla danych warunków eksploatacyjnych wykresy rozwoju pęknięcia, służące do wyznaczania okresów kontroli defektoskopowej danego koła z wykrytym pęknięciem. Podano przykład dla najczęstszych pęknięć narożnikowych.

The main reason of crack development in the rims of solid wheels are the thermal attacks during the intensive breaking, which induce big tension residual stresses and initial cracks. Using fundamentals of fracture mechanics one can determine velocity of crack propagation and the critical depth of fatigue cracks. There was given an example of the corner fatigue cracks growth. This enables us to calculate the safe the exploitation time of wheels with stated initial cracks.
