The paper describes high output induction motors driving large applications of heavy starting conditions. Heavy start is characterised by long accelerating time and occures in drives of hudge inertia torque, esspecially when performed at full load. The reliable operation of the motors depends on proper design and quality of rotor's cage. The aspects of thermal behaviour and electrodynamic forces have to be considered during the design of the motor for hard working conditions. In the paper the rotor with idle bars is investigated.

Field-circuit model of electric machine can be used for investigation of its structural components shape influence on operating characteristics. The high power induction motor model was applied to examine effects of rotor bar shape modification, consisting in replacement the trapezium shape bar with rectangular bar. Torque and current characteristics and characteristic quantity of start-up torque and current, maximum torque and critical slip were determined with field-circuit model. Electromagnetic torque, currents and rotational speed, as function of time during motor start, were determined also. The effect of rotor bar height change were examined in similar way. All rotor bar shape modifications were realized with constant cross-sectional area. The results confirm, that the exchange of bars in considered design will bring economic profits and won't cause significant deterioration of operating features.

Electrical motors operating at low temperatures and in aggressive environment, such as liquid natural gas for instance, should exhibit high reliability, efficiency, and good electromagnetic parameters, both in dynamic and static states as well. Low working temperature has significant influence on change of parameters of conductive materials, and electrical sheets. Changes of their parameters determine run and values of the current and torque during start of the cage induction motor. The paper presents results of laboratory tests, calculations, and computer simulations of parameters changes of conductive and magnetic materials submerged in liquid gas with temperature of-161°C. Results of calculation targeting to elaboration a way of the starting current decreasing and starting torque increasing of cage induction motors working at very low temperatures are given. The shape, cross-section and material of a rotor's cage are the most influential elements on the above mentioned motor's parameters. That is why the paper presents chosen results of the influence analyze of these elements on the torque and current values and runs of the studied motor.

One of the ways to improve the efficiency of an induction motor without increasing of frame size is to change the rotor cage material from aluminum to copper. Thanks to such an operation, the rotor cage resistance is decreased by about 40% and rotor's resistance losses are also significantly decreased. In consequence the efficiency of induction motor is higher by 1 to a few percent (depending on motor size and power). The copper rotor cages have been manufactured for many years using prefabricated copper bars. Such a construction of rotor cage is relatively expensive in manufacturing, and this is the main reason why this construction is usually used only in high power induction motors. Low and middle power induction motors have, in more cases, the rotor cage manufactured as an aluminum casting because of simple and inexpensive manufacturing technology. Since a few years in foreign technical papers and books an increased interest in casting of rotor cages with copper can be observed. In this paper the advantages and benefits of using rotor cages with copper casting are presented and discussed on an example of 4 pole induction motor with frame size 132.

In calculations of failure state of induction machines damage of squirrel-cage is simulated by magnify of resistance bars or ring segments. In this paper I'm going to answer a questions: in which way resistance of bar or ring segment is changing with level of failure? What level of resistance can I use as damage of bar? Have a precision of production of squirrel-cage an effect on resistance of bars? To answer these questions I made some simulations of this problem.

The work presented calculation results of a small power (1.5 kW) squirrel cage motor warm-up. Computation was realized with normal load. There is two models: one with non-damaged rotor and second one with three broken rotor bars. Calculation of coupling transient magneto-thermal field was realized with two-dimensional field-circuit motor model. There is a linear temperature characteristic of aluminum resistivity in squirrel cage, and a linear temperature characteristic of a thermal parameters in squirrel cage and core. Heating characteristic of motor with non-damaged rotor and another one with three broken rotor bars was compared. Heat distribution in rotor was investigated in both situation, in thermal transient state and after.

Some utilizing possibilities of induction motor stator phase current vector function hodographs as diagnostic signals to rotor cage bars (rings) ruptures early discovering during machine work have been described in the paper. As a result of rotor asymmetry, caused by cage bars ruptures, some (1 š2ks)f frequency band currents are induced in the stator, which are overlapping current base frequency (L=50Hz) component. In cases of rotor damages, hodograph course is deformed, comparing to not damaged motor hodograph course. Hodograph deformations, characteristic for rotor bar ruptures have been illustrated by a lot of oscillograph records received during laboratory investigations. These investigations have been carried out for damaged motor feeding cases by voltages from power network and from voltage frequency changers. Hodograph deformations characteristic features for rotor bars damage cases are also seen during simultaneous appearance of other dis-turbances as, for example, impedance asymmetry in one of phases or feeding voltages. It's properly to remark that with the number of ruptured bars the diagnostic signal value and its pulsation can diminished and even lesser values can be received then for little number of ruptured bars. For this reason it's useful to carry out the best continuous or from time to time cage bars control (monitoring), because it permits to discover damages already in initial stadium and by this to exclusion next bar damages and serious machine damages appearance. Diagnostic method proposed should be numbered to non invaded methods. In the solution, which is based on observation and evaluation of motor stator phase current hodographs, could be approved generally machine current measuring system which exist in industrial systems.

Krajowa energetyka, oparta na spalaniu paliw stałych, rocznie zużywa ok. 41 mln ton węgla kamiennego i ponad 65 mln ton węgla brunatnego, emitując do powietrza m.in. 147 mln ton CO2 (dane z roku 1995). Skutkiem takiego sposobu wytwarzania energii elektrycznej jest duże zanieczyszczenie środowiska oraz sukcesywny wzrost udziału kosztów energii elektrycznej w całkowitych kosztach działalności przedsiębiorstw.

Omówiono, proponowane w literaturze w ostatnich latach, metody wykrywania uszkodzeń klatki wirnika silnika asynchronicznego, umożliwiające diagnostykę silnika podczas jego normalnej eksploatacji. W szerszym zakresie przedstawiono możliwość wykorzystania hodografów prądu stojana maszyny asynchronicznej do wykrywania pęknięć prętów klatki wirnika.

The method of discovering the defects and the deteriorations of the rotor cage of the induction motor have been described lately in several publications. The above methods enables the diagnostics of the motor during its normal operation. The broad rangę of the possibility of the hodographs of the induction motor stator currents to discovering the detoriorations of rotor bars has been discussed in the paper. The results received by theoretical means and laboratory tests as well, arę shown; they arę quite specific for the defected rotor bars, when compared with the hodographs ofthe motors with the "healthy" rotor bars. The characteristic features of the hodographs of the defected rotor bars are visible for the non-sinusoidal supply voltage, and for the variable motor load torque as well.
