The paper discusses the topic of program realization of adaptive intelligent objects, as they are called. On the one hand, the topic looks as a novel challenge of development of intelligent environments and program objects, and on the other, in view of the fact that adaptation of engineering systems is the common science area, it has a proper history and common-used basics. Taking into account such reasons, the paper analyzes two issues: what are adaptive objects as components of a program system, and in what manner the latter could be realized in the form of program objects using self-tuning classes.

Several families of continuous means defined on a square I x I have the remarkable property of being entirely determined when their values in an arbitrary small neigborhood of the diagonal {(x,x) : x G 1} of the square are known. Some examples are given of application of this property in solving functional equations.
