Analysis of electrocardiogram and heart rate provides useful information about health condition of a patient. The North Sea Bicycle Race is an annual cycling competition in Norway. Examination of ECG recordings collected from participants of this race may allow defining and evaluating the relationship between physical endurance exercises and heart electrophysiology. Parameters reflecting potentially alarming deviations are to be identified in this study. This paper presents results of a time-domain analysis of ECG data collected in 2014, implementing K-Means clustering. A double stage analysis strategy, aimed at producing hierarchical clusters, is proposed. The first phase allows rough separation of data. Second stage is applied to reveal internal structure of the majority clusters. In both steps, discrepancies driving the separation could stem from three sources. Firstly, they could be signs of abnormalities in electrical activity of the heart. Secondly, they may allow discriminating between natural groups of participants – according to sex, age, physical fitness. Finally, some deviations could result from faults in data extraction, therefore serving in evaluation of the parameters. The clusters were defined predominantly by combinations of features: heartbeat signals correlation, P-wave shape, and RR intervals; none of the features alone was discriminative for all the clusters.

Clusters are perceived as accelerator of progress and competitiveness. Thus, the stimulation of their development has become a significant element of EU countries' policy. The selection of proper instruments that support duster development poses a peculiarly significant problem. In Poland for a couple of years clusters have become the object of special interest of public authorities of different levels as well. Validity of public administration getting engaged in cluster initiatives' development is undisputed. Principally it should consist in the stimulation of business environment to take up various forms of cooperation and creation of proper support instruments. In regional policy it plays a strictly qualitative role. However, although this problem has been given a high rank, Polish policy faces numerous restrictions here. The crucial one is Iow commitment and lack of understanding of the clustering idea itself by the self-government management.

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie zagadnienia, jakim jest klaster, i jego roli w praktyce gospodarczej Polski. Po wyjaśnieniu pojęcia klastra oraz jego teoretycznych podstaw podjęto próbę wskazania czynników zewnętrznych oraz wewnętrznych, które w sposób pośredni lub bezpośredni mają wpływ na kreację i rozwój gron firm. Spróbowano również dokonać typologii i podziału klastrów z wykorzystaniem dostępnych w literaturze światowej klasyfikacji. W dalszej części przedstawiono istotę koncepcji klasteringu w Polsce, aby przybliżyć jej znaczenie w rozwoju przedsiębiorczości w Polsce. Oprócz wzrostu konkurencyjności gospodarczej, która jest następstwem podwyższenia efektywności, zwrócono uwagę na inny wymiar klasteringu, jakim są działania mające znaczenie dla skupiska firm, takie jak współpraca czy zaufanie pomiędzy partnerami. Z wykorzystaniem dostępnych źródeł literaturowych czy internetowych charakterystykę tę wzbogacono licznymi tabelami i rysunkami. Na podstawie przedstawionej wcześniej koncepcji klasteringu omówiono również kilka przykładów sieci firm. W tym celu posłużono się przede wszystkim opisami studiów przypadków (case study) z polskiej praktyki gospodarczej. W ostatniej części rozwinięcia wskazano również na bariery mogące w znacznym stopniu utrudnić rozwój klastra oraz dokonano ich podziału. Artykuł zakończono podsumowaniem ogólnych rozważań nad zagadnieniem klastra i jego istotą w gospodarce polskiej. Wskazano na obszary wiedzy do tej pory niezbadane w ramach klasteringu.

The purpose of this article is to present the concept of a cluster and its role in the Polish business practice. The article contains a brief explanation of the term along with its theoretical foundations. Then an attempt was made to point out the external and internal factors which affect, whether directly or indirectly, the creation and development of clusters of companies. Furthermore, a typology and division of clusters based on the classifications available in the relevant literature were presented. Next, the essence of the concept of clustering in Poland was introduced in order to show its significance for the development of entrepreneurship in Poland. In addition to the increase in the economic competitiveness, which results from higher effectiveness, attention was drawn to another aspect of clustering, namely the undertaking of actions relevant for the cluster, such as cooperation or trust between the partners. Based on available literature and Internet sources, the description was enriched with numerous tables and figures. On the basis of the concept of clustering described earlier, several examples of networks of companies were discussed, mainly by way of describing case studies from the Polish business practice. Finally, barriers which may significantly hinder the development of a cluster were pointed out and classified. The end of the article is a summary of the main considerations related to the concept of a cluster and its significance in the Polish economy. Areas of knowledge were discussed, which so far have not been researched as regards clustering.
