Trwałość mostów zależy od wielu czynników, które można pogrupować w różne kategorie. Do najważniejszych można zaliczyć wiek obiektu i historię jego eksploatacji, materiał konstrukcji, rodzaj konstrukcji, obciążenia działające na nią, czynniki środowiskowe i jakość utrzymania. Czynniki te można opisać liczbowo za pomocą współczynników określanych podczas przeglądów mostów. Obserwując zmiany ich wartości w czasie, można przewidzieć tendencję zmian i w rezultacie określić trwałość mostu oraz zracjonalizować koszty utrzymania.

Durability of the bridge structure depends on many factors, which can be grouped in various categories. Among them, the most important are: age and history of its operational use, structural material, type of a structure, loads affecting the structure, environmental factors and quality of maintenance. Those factors are estimated as a result of current, basic and detailed inspections or taking data from permanently used monitoring systems. Observing the change of those estimations values in a longer period of time, it is possible to foresee tendency of changes and finally the durability of the bridge or its element and rationalize maintenance costs.

The paper presents the problem of concrete structure durability according to the guidelines included in the Eurocode 2. Corrosion processes of both concrete and steel have been briefly discussed as well as the following terms: classes of exposition and classes of construction. The proper designing of the concrete structures, due to their durability, consist in application of the appropriate concrete cover, application of the right concrete and limiting the width of cracks opening.
